How to Remove Adhesive Hooks Without Taking Paint
Straight down, slowly, at least twelve inches of stretch -- and five recoveries for when that does not work.

The short answer
Take the weight off first. Then hold the base of the hook against the wall with one hand, take the pull tab in the other, and pull it slowly straight down the wall -- never outward towards you -- stretching the strip at least 12 inches until it releases. That is the manufacturer's own published method, and the two things it gets right are the direction and the distance.

The method, step by step
1. Unload it completely. Take the coat, the frame, the bag off the hook before you touch the tab. A loaded strip is under tension in exactly the direction you are about to pull, and it will release unevenly.
2. Find the tab. On a hook it hangs below the base. On picture hanging strips it is behind the frame, at the bottom of each strip pair, which is why the frame has to come off the wall first -- tilt the bottom of the frame away and lift it off the strips.
3. Hold the base still. One hand flat on the hook base or on the wall just above the strip. If the base moves while you pull, the force goes into the wall instead of into the strip.
4. Pull straight down, along the wall. Not outward. Not at an angle. The strip is engineered to release by stretching thin, and it can only stretch if it stays flat against the surface.
5. Keep going -- at least 12 inches. This is the step people abandon. The published instruction is to stretch the strip at least 12 inches, and on a large strip it can be more. It will feel wrong long before it lets go.
6. One tab at a time. On a multi-strip hook or a picture strip set, do them individually. Pulling two at once loads the surface unevenly and is a reliable way to lift paint between them.

Five things that go wrong, and what to do
1. The tab snapped off flush with the wall
The most common failure, and it is recoverable. Work a length of dental floss or thin fishing line behind the strip from one side and saw gently downward. You are cutting the adhesive rather than lifting it, which keeps the force off the paint. Warming the area first with a hairdryer on low makes the adhesive softer and the sawing easier.
2. It stretches but will not let go
Keep going. Twelve inches is a minimum, not a target, and on a large or long-installed strip you may need considerably more. If the strip is fully extended and still holding, warm it and try again -- heat reduces the adhesive's grip without any mechanical force on the wall.
3. The strip broke in the middle
Now you have two pieces with no tab. Treat both as case one: floss behind them and saw. Do not be tempted to pick at an edge with a knife or a scraper, which is how a small adhesive problem becomes a gouge in the drywall.
4. There is adhesive residue left on the wall
Residue means the strip sheared rather than released, usually from pulling at an angle. Roll it off gently with a fingertip first -- fresh residue often balls up and lifts. If it does not, warm it and try again. Solvents are a last resort on painted drywall: they can soften the paint faster than they soften the adhesive, and a shiny patch reads as badly as a missing one.
5. Paint came off with it
Stop pulling any others in the same way. The wall is telling you the paint-to-wall bond is weaker than the adhesive's grip -- usually uncured paint, wallpaper or a patched area. For everything remaining, switch to warm-and-floss rather than tab-and-pull, which keeps the peeling force off the surface entirely.
Removing from surfaces that are not painted drywall
Painted trim and window casing. This is where shades, brackets and bathroom mounts usually live, and it is still paint -- often gloss or satin over wood, which can lift in a sheet. Warm it and peel slowly at a shallow angle rather than pulling away from the surface.
Tile, glass and metal. The easiest surfaces. There is nothing on them for the adhesive to lift, so residue is the only real risk and it wipes off with warmth and patience.
Wallpaper. The manufacturer rules wallpaper out for mounting, which means there is no good removal method either -- the strip's bond to the paper can exceed the paper's bond to the wall. If something is already on wallpaper, warm it thoroughly and floss behind it, and accept that this one may not come off clean.
Do this in the right order at move-out
Removal is the last physical job in a tenancy and it is almost always done in the worst possible conditions: in a hurry, with the room empty, with a van outside. Take everything down a week early instead, while there is still time to deal with a torn patch calmly.
