The short answer
Published adhesive hook ratings run from 0.5 lb for a small wire hook to 7.5 lb for the jumbo utility hook. Picture hanging strips are rated higher because they spread the load: 15 lb for a large set and 20 lb for the XL heavyweight set. Every one of those figures assumes a smooth, solid, fully cured painted surface, indoors, with the weight hanging straight down.
This is the table this site exists to publish. It is not hard information to find one product at a time -- it is on the packaging -- but nobody puts it in one place, and the comparison is where the useful decisions are. Why strips out-rate hooks by so much
A hook concentrates the whole load at one point and pulls the top edge of the adhesive away from the wall -- a peeling force, which is the direction adhesive is weakest in. Strips lock together along their length and hold a flat object against the wall, so the same adhesive works mostly in shear instead. That is the entire reason a set of strips publishes 20 lb while the biggest hook publishes 7.5 lb, and it is why choosing between hooks and strips is a question about the shape of your object, not about brand or price.
What these numbers do not tell you
Three things, all of which matter more than the gap between a 3 lb and a 5 lb hook.
- Shock loads are not covered. A 3 lb rating describes 3 lb hanging quietly. It does not describe a coat being yanked down by a sleeve, which briefly applies far more than its own weight.
- Surface condition is doing most of the work. The rating assumes a clean, cured, smooth surface. Dust, a slightly glossy paint, or a wall wiped down with something oily changes the outcome and no published number accounts for it.
- Humidity is a separate product line. The indoor adhesive is not specified for a steamy bathroom -- that is what the water-resistant Bath range is for. The mechanism is in why adhesive fails in bathrooms.
How to use this table in a store
Weigh the object loaded, then buy the next rating up. If the object is flat-backed, use strips rather than a hook and you gain capacity for free. If your wall is textured or papered, stop here -- the ratings do not apply to you, and the surface matrix covers what your options actually are. If the number you need is above 20 lb, the answer is a system that does not use your walls at all.

How much can Command strips hold?

Some retailer listings also quote per-pair figures for the smaller sizes -- one pound for small, three for medium, four for large -- so check whether the number in front of you is per pair or per set.
Is the rating per hook or for the whole pack?
Per hook, for hooks. Picture hanging strips are rated per set, because the load spreads across every pair you use. That difference is the single most common misreading of these numbers.
Do adhesive hooks hold less over time?
The manufacturer publishes a rating, not a service life, so we cannot honestly quote a decay figure. What is published is the condition set: indoor, smooth, solid, fully cured surfaces at room temperature. Bathrooms, direct sun and unheated rooms fall outside it.
What holds the most weight without drilling?
