How these are ranked

The shape of the decision

There are really only three questions, and they take about a minute to answer.

1. What does the thing weigh, loaded?

Not what it weighs empty. A tote bag weighs half a pound and then you put a laptop in it. A bath towel weighs under a pound dry and considerably more soaked. Weigh the object in the state it will spend most of its life in, then buy the rating above that -- not the rating at it.

2. What is the wall?

Command's own published guidance says these products are for smooth, solid surfaces and are not recommended for textured walls, wallpaper, brick, rough or non-stick surfaces, or fabric. That is not a caveat buried in the small print; it is the difference between the rating applying and the rating being meaningless. Freshly painted walls need their paint fully cured first, which is a matter of weeks, not days.

3. How does it come off?

Every product here removes by pulling the strip tab straight down, slowly, until the adhesive stretches and releases. The failures happen when someone pulls at an angle or in a hurry.
