Why Adhesive Fails in Bathrooms
A separate water-resistant product line exists for a reason. This is that reason, and what it does not fix.

The short answer
Three things: water at the glue line, heat, and soap film on the surface the adhesive needs to bond to. The manufacturer's answer is a separate water-resistant product range specified for wet environments -- the standard indoor strips are not. Even the water-resistant range still needs a smooth, sound, non-textured surface, which is why mountings that touch nothing (freestanding, floor-to-ceiling tension) sit above adhesive in every bathroom ranking on this site.
What a bathroom does to a bond
Water gets between
An adhesive bond is a contact phenomenon: it works because the adhesive is in intimate contact with the surface. Liquid water at the edge of a strip is a competing substance trying to occupy that same interface, and a bathroom supplies it directly, repeatedly and under pressure from a shower head. This is why the manufacturer sells water-resistant strips as a distinct product rather than telling you the indoor ones are fine.
Heat softens
Adhesives are visco-elastic: warmer means softer and more inclined to creep under a steady load. A hot shower raises the wall temperature well above the room-temperature conditions the published rating assumes. Creep is also why a caddy that seemed fine for weeks appears one morning an inch lower than it was.
Soap film contaminates
The most underrated of the three. Shampoo, conditioner and soap leave a film on every surface in a shower, and adhesive applied over that film bonds to the film rather than to the tile. Cleaning with rubbing alcohol immediately before mounting is not fussiness -- it is the difference between the rating applying and not.

If you are using adhesive in a bathroom anyway
- Use the water-resistant range. Not the indoor strips. They are different products for a reason.
- Mount on tile or glass where possible. Both are smooth, both are on the published list, and neither has paint to lift at removal.
- Clean with rubbing alcohol immediately before mounting. Not a bathroom spray -- most leave exactly the sort of residue you are trying to remove.
- Mount outside the direct spray if you can. The corner furthest from the shower head sees less standing water than the wall opposite it.
- Let it cure before loading, and load light. Adhesive builds strength over hours, and a bathroom is the worst place to be impatient.
- Check it monthly. Creep gives warning: a caddy that has moved a fraction is telling you it will keep moving.

Why do adhesive hooks fall off in the bathroom?
Three reasons at once: water reaching the glue line, heat softening the adhesive so it creeps under load, and soap film on the surface so the adhesive bonds to the film rather than the tile. Standard indoor strips are not specified for wet environments at all.
Can you use Command strips in a shower?
