This site spends a lot of its time explaining that the damage-free hanging category has a low ceiling: 7.5 lb for an adhesive hook, 20 lb for a set of picture strips, and above that no adhesive product exists that will honestly do the job.
There is one exception, and it is not a better glue. If the surface is steel, a magnet the size of a bottle cap publishes 65 lb of pull force -- more than three times the highest adhesive figure on the site -- and it leaves absolutely nothing behind when you take it off. No cure time, no residue, no paint coming away with the strip. In a rental, the fridge door, the steel entry door, the file cabinet and the locker are all surfaces you are allowed to use and most people never do.
The catch is the number itself. Pull force is not hanging capacity, and the gap between the two is bigger than anyone expects. This page ranks magnetic hooks on published figures, and on which makers are honest about what happens to those figures on a real door.
What "20 lb" on a magnetic hook actually means
Master Magnetics, who make most of the hooks here and have been doing it since 1976, publish their test method. Each magnet is tested against a half-inch thick, ground steel plate, with a clean magnet face and a clean plate, and a gauge pulls it straight up until it releases. The figure on the packet is the force at that moment.
Three things about that test are nothing like your kitchen.
1. It pulls straight off, not down
A hook on a fridge door is loaded sideways. The magnet is not being peeled off the steel; it is being asked not to slide down it, which is friction rather than magnetic pull. Master Magnetics states the consequence in the listings themselves: "The force is 50% less on a vertical surface". Halve the number on the packet before you do anything else.
2. The test plate is bare steel; your door is painted
The same sentence continues: "and less on steel that is painted". Every fridge door has a finish on it, and each coat of paint or laminate holds the magnet that much further from the steel. The maker does not put a second number on it, so neither do we -- but it is a reduction on top of the halving, not instead of it.
3. The plate is thicker than any appliance panel
Half an inch of ground steel is thicker than a fridge door, a locker or a file cabinet by a wide margin, and thin steel holds a magnet less well. Worth noting: the conditions are not even consistent across one maker's own range. The 65 lb swing hook publishes a quarter-inch plate, the 14 lb hook set publishes a half-inch one. Compare the numbers knowing they were not all measured the same way.
Put together: a 20 lb hook is roughly a 10 lb hook on a vertical door, and less on a painted one. That is still more than any adhesive hook this site ranks, which is the real story here -- it is just not 20 lb.

How these are ranked
What the maker publishes about your situation comes first. A hook that states a supported load, or states how much force it loses on a vertical painted surface, is worth more than a bigger number with no conditions attached -- the same standard applied to the adhesive ratings in the published weight limits table.
Then strength, read after the derating rather than before it. Then what it does to the finish, because a fridge door is a surface you hand back. Then price per hook. The full method is here. We have not tested any of these; every figure on this page is somebody else's published number.
First, check the surface takes a magnet at all
This is the step that wastes the most money in this category, and it takes five seconds. Not every stainless steel fridge is magnetic. Much of the stainless used for appliance fronts holds a magnet poorly or not at all, and no figure on this page means anything on a door a magnet will not stick to. Take any fridge magnet you already own and try it on the door, the side panel and the freezer drawer separately -- the answer can differ across one appliance.
The surfaces in a typical rental that usually do work:
- The side of the fridge, which is often plain painted steel even when the front is not, and which is dead space in almost every kitchen
- Steel entry and fire doors, including the frame, which is frequently steel even when the door is not
- Lockers, file cabinets and metal shelving -- the reason this works so well in a dorm room
- Radiators, boiler cabinets and metal window frames, all of which take a hook and none of which take a screw
And the ones that do not: aluminum, stainless of the non-magnetic kind, wood, plaster, tile and glass -- with one exception, the paired glass hooks at the bottom of this page, which clamp through a single pane rather than sticking to it.
Ceramic or neodymium?
The hooks here are both kinds and the difference is practical rather than technical.
Ceramic (ferrite) magnets are the white and chrome discs: cheaper, larger for the same force, and easier to reposition. Six of the eight picks are ceramic, and for a fridge door that is usually the right choice -- the force is adequate once you have halved it, and you can move the hook with one hand.
Neodymium is the rare earth material in the 65 lb swing hook. It puts far more force in a much smaller disc, which is exactly what you want for the heaviest thing you plan to hang and exactly what makes it awkward: a strong rare-earth hook resists being pulled straight off a panel, so you take it off by sliding it to an edge. Plan for that on a finish you care about.
What to hang, once the numbers are honest
Halve every pull figure, allow a bit more for paint, and the category sorts itself out quickly. A 9 lb hook is a keys-and-utensils hook. A 20 lb hook, derated, carries a tote bag or a wet dish towel comfortably. The 65 lb swing hook is the one to reach for when the load is a heavy coat or a bag of tools and the surface is a solid steel door rather than a thin appliance panel.
Weigh the thing loaded rather than empty -- the same habit this site applies to damage-free wall hooks and to towels in best no-drill towel racks. A tote weighs half a pound until you put a laptop in it.
One more consideration that does not apply to adhesive: a magnetic hook can be knocked sideways. A fridge door swings, and a hook near the handle takes a small shove several times a day. Put the load where the door movement will not walk it downward, and check it in the first week.
What we would skip
The unbranded "30 LB / 80 LB / 170 LB" hooks that fill this category. Search magnetic hooks and you will get page after page of them, most currently badged for cruise cabins, from sellers with no manufacturer behind them. The numbers in those titles are pull forces at best, quoted with no test conditions, no plate thickness and no vertical derating -- and a 170 lb claim on a hook smaller than a coin tells you how much of the category is marketing. We do not rank them, for the same reason we do not rank the marketplace adhesive shelves in best no-drill corner shelves: a figure that appears only in a listing title is not a specification.
Any magnetic hook for a wall. Drywall, plaster and tile are not ferrous, and no amount of pull force changes that. If the surface is a wall rather than a steel panel, the honest options are the adhesive range in best adhesive hooks for renters, and above its ceiling, a mechanism that does not touch the wall at all.
Magnets on a door you share. Worth a thought rather than a rule: a hook on a fire door or a shared-hallway steel door is easy to remove, which means anyone can remove it. Keep the ones with your things on them inside your own space.
Where magnets fit in the rest of the house
Magnetic hooks solve one specific problem -- hanging things on steel -- and they solve it better than anything else available to a renter. Questions people actually ask
How much weight can a magnetic hook hold on a fridge?
Considerably less than the number on the packet. Pull force is measured straight off a clean, flat, thick steel plate; on a vertical door the hook is held by friction instead. Master Magnetics states the force is 50 percent less on a vertical surface and less again on painted steel, so read a 20 lb hook as roughly 10 lb on a fridge door, and less on a painted one.
Do magnetic hooks work on stainless steel?
Sometimes. Much of the stainless used on appliance fronts holds a magnet poorly or not at all, and one appliance can differ across its own door, side panel and freezer drawer. Test with a fridge magnet you already own before buying anything.
What does pull force mean on a magnetic hook?
It is the force needed to pull the magnet straight off a steel plate in a laboratory test. Master Magnetics uses a half-inch thick ground steel plate with clean surfaces and pulls upward until the magnet releases. It is not the weight the hook will hold hanging on a vertical door.
Are magnetic hooks strong enough for a coat?
The stronger ones are, on the right surface. The 65 lb rare-earth swing hook we cover has the headroom for a heavy coat on a solid steel door even after halving the figure for vertical use. A 9 lb ceramic hook does not; that is a keys and utensils hook.
Do magnetic hooks damage a fridge door?
Not by being magnetic. Damage comes from sliding a bare magnet across the finish or trapping grit under the magnet face. Two picks here state a non-scratch liner and one states padding; on the rest, add a felt pad and lift the hook off rather than dragging it.
Ceramic or neodymium magnetic hooks?
Ceramic for most rental jobs: cheaper, larger for the same force, and easy to reposition. Neodymium when you need maximum force in a small disc, accepting that a strong rare-earth hook is harder to remove and comes off best by sliding it to the edge of the panel.
Can you hang anything on a glass door without drilling?
With a paired magnet that clamps through the pane. The set we cover publishes 35 lb through a single pane of glass and states plainly that it will not work on thick double-pane glass or on non-ferrous frames such as aluminum or wood. Most modern exterior doors are double glazed, so check first.
