For most front doors, buy an over-the-door wreath hanger, and the Haute Decor adjustable is the one to get: it publishes 20 lb, fits doors up to 1.8 in, and is the only hanger we found that states the clearance its strap needs above the door -- 0.11 in, about two dimes. If your door is steel or a single-pane storm door, use magnets instead and nothing goes over the top at all.
The question people actually ask -- how do I hang a wreath without putting a nail in a door I do not own -- has three answers, and they are not interchangeable.
The short answer
How we judged these
A wreath is a light object hung in the worst possible place: on the one door in the house that gets slammed, left open in the wind, and expected to latch properly every night. So we ranked on fit before load.
First, the strap thickness. An over-door hanger puts metal between the door and the frame. Published figures here run from 0.04 to 0.11 in -- nearly a threefold spread -- and that is the number that decides whether your door still shuts and locks.
Second, the door thickness it names. Every over-door hanger here publishes a maximum, which is more than can be said for the over-door mirror category.
Third, the published load. It matters least, because almost nothing beats these figures. A large decorated artificial wreath is a few pounds; a fresh evergreen one soaked after rain is heavier but still in single figures. Twenty pounds is not a constraint.
Fourth, what it leaves. Nothing here bonds to the door except the adhesive option, which is the only one with a removal procedure to follow.
The strap thickness is the whole decision
A modern exterior door is fitted with a few millimeters of clearance at the top, and weather seals take up some of that. Slide 0.11 in of steel into that gap and one of three things happens: the door closes normally, the door closes but rubs, or the door stops latching.
The published figures are far enough apart to choose by:
| Hanger | Published load | Door thickness published | Over-door thickness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haute Decor AWH306 adjustable | 20 lb | Up to 1.8 in | 0.11 in, plus a stated 0.11 in clearance needed |
| Aeranto 12 in slim | 22 lb | Up to 2 in | 0.04 in |
| GP Life GP-9 adjustable | 20 lb | Below 1.8 in | 0.078 in |
| Haute Decor Attract magnetic (MWH007) | 5-10 lb steel; 2-7 lb glass | Not applicable | Nothing over the door |
| Westmon Works WW-MW-2 magnetic | 6 lb each | Not applicable | Nothing over the door |
| Command Outdoor Bronze Hook (AW083BZ) | 5 lb | Not applicable | Nothing over the door |
Magnetic: brilliant on the right door, useless on the wrong one
A magnetic hanger is the cleanest answer in existence. Nothing goes over the door, so the door closes exactly as it did; nothing bonds, so there is nothing to remove; and it slides off sideways in January.
It also does not work on most front doors, and the better of the two products here says so itself. Haute Decor states plainly that Attract will not work on thick or double-pane glass, or on non-magnetic surfaces including wood and aluminum -- which rules out the most common front door material in American housing.
The test is a fridge magnet. If it sticks to the door face, you have a steel door. If it does not, you have wood, fiberglass or aluminum, and no magnetic hanger will hold whatever its listing claims. This is the same pull-versus-hold distinction the magnetic hooks page covers in detail: a magnet rated for pull force straight off a surface holds far less hanging down the face of it.
The storm-door case is the interesting one. Attract is sold as a pair precisely so one magnet goes on each side of a single pane of glass, clamping through it. Published that way it holds 2 to 7 lb depending on the glass thickness, which is enough for a light wreath and not enough for a big decorated one.
Adhesive: the fallback, with conditions
If the door takes no strap and no magnet, the remaining answer is an outdoor-rated adhesive hook. The ceiling is lower -- 5 lb is the top of the range we cover in best outdoor adhesive hooks -- and the conditions are real. Outdoor Command strips have a published application temperature range, and a door that has been repainted recently needs the full cure time before anything sticks to it.
The practical note from that page applies doubly here: put the hook up in October, not on the first cold morning in December. Adhesive applied below its stated temperature range is the single most common cause of a wreath on the doorstep.
Adjustable or fixed
Fixed hangers are a drop of 12 to 15 in. Adjustable ones extend to 25 in. The difference matters more than it sounds, because a wreath centered on a 36 in wide door looks wrong if it sits too high, and a door with a glazed panel or a letter plate has places the wreath cannot go.
The rule of thumb that holds up: the wreath wants to sit roughly in the middle of the solid upper panel of the door, with the hanger hidden behind it. Measure from the top of the door to where you want the top of the wreath, then subtract the wreath's own hanging loop. A fixed 12 in hanger puts a 20 in wreath across the upper-middle of a standard door, which is why that length is the most common one sold.
What we would skip
A magnetic hanger on an unverified door. Test with a fridge magnet first. The failure mode is not a weak hold, it is no hold at all.
The thickest strap on the tightest door. If two dimes do not fit in the gap, the 0.11 in hanger will stop the door latching, and a front door that does not latch is a security problem rather than a decorating one.
Adhesive in December. Every outdoor adhesive product we cover publishes an application temperature range and December is usually outside it.
Anything hung on a storm door that slams. A storm door closer snaps the door shut hard, and a wreath on the outside of one takes that impact every time somebody comes home. Hang it on the main door behind instead.
The rest of the door
A wreath hanger is the lightest thing anyone hangs on a door, and this site covers what else goes on one: over-the-door hooks and racks rank on published per-hook load, and door thickness and clearance is the measuring job that governs all of them. For everything else that goes on an exterior wall or door without a fixing, outdoor adhesive hooks has the temperature ranges.
The picks in full
Every figure below is published by the manufacturer or the retailer listing named beside it. Where a figure is not published, the row says so rather than carrying an estimate.

#1 · Best overall: 20 lb, and the only one to publish the door clearance
Haute Decor Adjustable Length Wreath Hanger (AWH306)
Haute Decor · Best for a heavy wreath on a door you cannot afford to stop closing
9.1
out of 10
The only wreath hanger we found that publishes the clearance its strap needs above the door, which is the figure that decides whether your door still latches.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published load | Up to 20 lb | Haute Decor AWH306 product listing |
| Door thickness published | Fits doors up to 1.8 in thick | Haute Decor AWH306 product listing |
| Clearance required | 0.11 in of clearance above the door, which the listing glosses as about the thickness of two dimes | Haute Decor AWH306 product listing |
| Length | Extends from 16.5 to 25 in on a slide mechanism | Haute Decor AWH306 product listing |
| Door protection | Protective pads stated on the back to prevent scratches and dings; all-season metal | Haute Decor AWH306 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 20 lb published, which is more than any wreath most people own
- The 0.11 in clearance figure is published rather than discovered at the door
- 16.5 to 25 in of adjustment covers a tall door and a low-hung wreath
What it does not cover
- 0.11 in is the thickest strap in this group, so it is the one most likely to foul a tight door frame
- Costs two to three times the unbranded hangers that publish similar figures
- One hanger per pack at this price
Coming off the wall
Lift it off the top of the door. Nothing is fixed, bonded or stuck to anything.

Skip this if your door already sticks or has been repainted a few times. The strap is the thickest here and a tight rebate will not take it.

#2 · Best for a tight door frame: 0.04 in strap, doors up to 2 in
Aeranto Slim Over-the-Door Wreath Hanger, 12 in
Aeranto · Best for a door with a tight frame or a thick slab
8.3
out of 10
Publishes the thinnest strap in the group at 0.04 in and the widest door range at up to 2 in, which is the combination a stiff door needs.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Strap thickness published | 0.04 in profile over the top of the door, the thinnest figure published here | Aeranto 12 in product listing |
| Door thickness published | Stated to fit most doors up to 2 in thick | Aeranto 12 in product listing |
| Published load | Stated to hold up to 22 lb | Aeranto 12 in product listing |
| Length | 12 in, fixed -- no adjustment | Aeranto 12 in product listing |
| Material | Steel, stated as reusable year after year | Aeranto 12 in product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 0.04 in is thin enough that most doors close as if nothing is there
- Up to 2 in of door is the widest published range in this group
- The cheapest product on this page by a wide margin
What it does not cover
- Fixed 12 in length, so the wreath sits where the hanger puts it
- The 22 lb claim is higher than the branded alternative's 20 lb from a maker with no published test behind it
- Unidentifiable marketplace brand, so the figures are a listing claim rather than a manufacturer's spec sheet
Coming off the wall
Lifts off the door.

#3 · Best value adjustable: 15-25 in, 0.078 in strap, 20 lb
GP Life Adjustable Wreath Hanger, 15-25 in (GP-9)
GP Life · Best for adjustability on a budget
8.5
out of 10
Adjustable like the branded one and half the price, and it publishes both figures that matter: 0.078 in over the door and doors below 1.8 in.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Strap thickness published | 0.078 in of metal over the top of the door | GP Life GP-9 product listing |
| Door thickness published | Stated to fit doors below 1.8 in thick; over-door width stated as 1.8 in | GP Life GP-9 product listing |
| Published load | Stated to hold 20 lb | GP Life GP-9 product listing |
| Length | Adjustable from 15 to 25 in by a push-button on the back; hanger width 1.14 in | GP Life GP-9 product listing |
| Door protection | Protective felt stated on the inside face | GP Life GP-9 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Publishes strap thickness, door range and load -- the full set
- 0.078 in sits between the slim and branded options
- Button adjustment rather than a friction slide
What it does not cover
- 'Below 1.8 in' is a slightly softer statement than a stated maximum
- No clearance figure for the gap above the door
- Sold under one brand name and manufactured under another, so the maker is hard to pin down
Coming off the wall
Lifts off the door. The felt is on the hanger, not the door.
Skip this if
Skip this if your door is at the thick end. 'Below 1.8 in' leaves no margin on a 1 3/4 in exterior slab once paint is counted.

#4 · Best for a steel or storm door: 5-10 lb, nothing over the top
Haute Decor Attract Magnetic Wreath Hanger, Set of 2 (MWH007)
Haute Decor · Best for a steel front door, or a single-pane storm door
8.8
out of 10
The honest magnetic option: it publishes two different load figures for two different surfaces, and it publishes the surfaces it will not work on at all.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published load, steel | 5 to 10 lb on steel surfaces | Haute Decor MWH007 product listing |
| Published load, glass | 2 to 7 lb on single-pane glass, used as a pair with one magnet on each side of the pane | Haute Decor MWH007 product listing |
| Will not work on | Stated explicitly: thick or double-pane glass, and non-magnetic surfaces including wood and aluminum | Haute Decor MWH007 product listing |
| Size | 3.75 x 2.6 x 0.5 in per magnet, set of 2 | Haute Decor MWH007 product listing |
| Door protection | Soft padding stated on the back; extended hook stated to give leverage for removal | Haute Decor MWH007 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Nothing goes over the door top at all, so the door closes exactly as it did
- Publishes different loads for steel and glass rather than one flattering number
- States the surfaces it fails on, which is rarer than it should be
What it does not cover
- A wood door, the most common front door, is explicitly ruled out
- The glass figure of 2 to 7 lb rules out most decorated wreaths
- Set of two means two separate magnets to keep track of out of season
Coming off the wall
Slides off sideways. No adhesive, no hook over the door edge, and the door is untouched.
Skip this if
Skip this if your front door is wood, fiberglass or aluminum. The listing says so itself, and a magnet on a non-magnetic door is not a weak hold, it is no hold.

#5 · Best simple magnet: one published figure, 6 lb each
Westmon Works Magnetic Wreath Hanger, Set of 2 (WW-MW-2)
Westmon Works · Best for a light wreath on a steel door, year round
8.0
out of 10
A simpler magnetic hook that publishes one clear figure -- 6 lb each -- and does not pretend to work on glass.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published load | 6 lb each, two supplied | Westmon Works WW-MW-2 product listing |
| Size | 2.5 in long each | Westmon Works WW-MW-2 product listing |
| Surfaces | Stated for any metal door or metal wall, indoors or out | Westmon Works WW-MW-2 product listing |
| Door protection | All-weather rubber exterior stated, described as non-abrasive | Westmon Works WW-MW-2 product listing |
| Pull force published | Not published. The 6 lb figure is given as a hold, with no pull-force rating behind it | Westmon Works WW-MW-2 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- One figure, stated plainly, with no surface-by-surface caveats to decode
- Rubber-faced, so a painted steel door is not scratched
- Two in the pack, so a double door is covered
What it does not cover
- 6 lb is less than half what a good over-door hanger publishes
- No published pull force, so it cannot be compared with the magnetic hooks elsewhere on this site
- Metal only -- no glass option at all
Coming off the wall
Slides off. Nothing bonded, nothing over the door edge.

#6 · Best for a door that will not take a strap: 5 lb adhesive
Command Outdoor Metallic Bronze Hooks, 5 lb (AW083BZ)
Command · Best for a wreath or sign on a front door, through a whole winter
8.8
out of 10
The highest published figure in the outdoor range at 5 lb a hook, rated to survive -20F to 125F. Read the strip line on the listing before you buy it, though.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Rated load | 1 hook holds 5 lb; 3 hooks and 4 strips in the pack | Command AW083BZ product listing |
| Temperature range | Stated to handle temperature extremes from -20F to 125F | Command AW083BZ product listing |
| Surfaces | Walls, doors, trim and siding, per the listing | Command AW083BZ product listing |
| Documentation note | The listing describes the included strips as "4 large indoor strips" while selling the hook as outdoor -- the only outdoor pack here that does | Command AW083BZ product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 5 lb is the highest published outdoor figure we could source, and it covers a heavy wreath
- A -20F to 125F range is a genuinely wide service window for an adhesive product
- Bronze finish is the only one here that disappears against a stained or dark-painted front door
What it does not cover
- The listing's own strip description says indoor, which is a documentation contradiction on a product sold for outdoor use
- Three hooks and four strips means you cannot re-hang all three once without buying refills
- 5 lb on a door that slams is a different load to 5 lb on a wall -- derate it yourself
Coming off the wall
Stretch-release, straight down the surface. On an exterior door the thing to watch is not the paint but the cold: adhesive removed below freezing tears rather than stretches, so bring the door temperature up first if you can.

Questions people actually ask
Will a wreath hanger stop my door closing?
It depends on one published figure almost nobody checks: how thick the strap is where it crosses the top of the door. The hangers here publish 0.04 in, 0.078 in and 0.11 in. Haute Decor goes further and states that its hanger needs 0.11 in of clearance above the door, about two dimes. Slide a dime into the gap above your closed door before buying -- if one is a tight fit, buy the 0.04 in slim hanger.
How much weight can a wreath hanger hold?
The over-door hangers here publish 20 lb and 22 lb, which is far more than any wreath. Magnetic hangers are the ones where the figure matters: 5 to 10 lb on a steel door and 2 to 7 lb clamped through single-pane glass, and 6 lb each for the simpler magnets. Adhesive is the lowest at a published 5 lb for the outdoor hook we cover.
Do magnetic wreath hangers work on any front door?
No, and the better maker says so on its own listing. Magnetic hangers hold on steel doors and on single-pane glass when used as a pair clamping through the pane. They will not work on wood, fiberglass, aluminum or double-pane glass. Test yours with a fridge magnet before buying: if the magnet does not stick, no magnetic hanger will hold regardless of its rating.
How do you hang a wreath without nails or screws?
Three ways, in order of how much weight they publish. An over-the-door hanger slides over the top of the door and holds 20 lb or more with nothing fixed to anything. A magnetic hanger sticks to a steel door or clamps through storm-door glass at 5 to 10 lb. An outdoor-rated adhesive hook bonds to a smooth painted surface at a published 5 lb, and is the only one of the three with a removal procedure to follow.
What length wreath hanger should I buy?
A fixed 12 to 15 in hanger puts a standard 20 in wreath across the upper-middle of an ordinary door, which is why that is the common size. Buy adjustable if the door has a glazed panel, a letter plate or a knocker to clear, or if the door is unusually tall -- the adjustable hangers here extend to 25 in. Measure from the top of the door to where you want the top of the wreath, then allow for the wreath's own hanging loop.
Will a wreath hanger scratch the door?
Every hanger on this page addresses it, which tells you it is a real risk. The over-door hangers state protective pads or felt on the inside face, and the magnetic ones state rubber or soft padding on the back. The damage people actually report is not a scratch but a rub mark where a loose hanger has moved against the paint over a season, so a hanger that fits the door snugly is also the one that marks it least.
Can I leave a wreath hanger up all year?
The over-door and magnetic ones, yes -- they are all stated as all-season or all-weather metal, and leaving one in place costs nothing. Adhesive is the one to think about: it is rated for outdoor use but it is also the only product here bonded to the door's finish, and the sensible pattern is the one our outdoor hook page recommends, which is to apply it in mild weather and take it off cleanly rather than leave it through a freeze-thaw cycle.
