The short answer
Buy a rack when you need several things on the door and your door is 1.5 inches or thinner -- the Umbra publishes 5 lb per hook across 14. Buy a single adjustable hook when the door is thick (up to 2-1/4 inches), when you need one or two items, or when the door has to keep closing cleanly. Neither publishes a whole-unit total.
Racks and hooks are not the same purchase
Racks
A rack turns the back of a door into a wall of hooks. It is the higher-capacity option and the one that changes how a room works -- a bedroom door with 14 hooks on it absorbs the coats, bags and robes that were previously on a chair. The cost is that a rack is large, it has a fixed door-thickness limit, and it projects further into the swing arc.
Single hooks
A single hook does one job in one place: a towel on the bathroom door, a coat by the entrance. The adjustable ones are the only products in this category that reliably fit a 1-3/4 inch solid-core door, which is what makes them the answer when a rack simply will not seat. They are also low profile, so the door tends to keep closing normally.

Matching the hook to the door
Measure the door edge first, always (how to measure, and the two clearances). Then:
- 1.25 in or under: everything here fits, including the wooden rack.
- Around 1-3/8 in (a common hollow-core interior door): the Yamazaki steel hanger and the Umbra both fit; the wooden rack does not.
- 1.5 in: the Umbra is at its published limit -- use its attachable hooks for the extra tenth of an inch.
- 1-3/4 in and up: only the adjustable hook, published to 2-1/4 in.
The alternatives on the same door

Are over-the-door hooks or racks better?
Different jobs. A rack gives you many hooks and, on the Umbra, the highest published per-hook figure at 5 lb, but has a tighter door limit and a bigger profile. A single adjustable hook fits thicker doors and keeps the door closing cleanly.
What over-door hook fits a 1-3/4 inch door?

Can I hang wet towels on an over-door hook?
Weigh one first. A wet bath towel is heavier than a dry one by a surprising margin, and a 2.2 lb per-hook rating is not much once water is involved.
