Apartment Closet Organization Without Drilling
One closet, the wrong shape, and a lease that says no holes. Here is the order to fix it in.

The short answer
Work in this order: measure the closet, use the door, add a second rail with a tension rod, use the floor, then use the shelf above the rail. Every step is reversible and none of it needs a fixing -- the only numbers you need are the door thickness and the closet width.
Rental closets are rarely badly sized so much as badly divided: one rail at one height, one shelf above it, and a large volume of unused air underneath the hanging clothes. Most of what follows is about dividing that volume rather than buying more storage.
Step 1: three measurements
- The internal width, side to side, at the height a second rail would sit. That is your tension rod size -- see tension rod sizing.
- The door edge thickness, if the closet has a hinged door. That decides whether over-door hardware fits (door thickness and fit). Bifold and sliding doors take none of it.
- The drop below the hanging clothes. Shirts and jackets leave a large gap above the floor; that gap is where a second rail or a set of drawers goes.
Step 2: use the door
If the closet has a hinged door, the back of it is free storage that touches no wall. A rack publishing 5 lb per hook across 14 hooks takes bags, belts, scarves and the daily layer off the rail entirely. If the closet has a bifold or slider, skip this step -- and consider putting the rack on the bedroom door instead, which is the same idea one room out.
Step 3: add a second rail
A tension rod fitted below the existing rail doubles hanging capacity for short items -- shirts, skirts, folded trousers. Choose the rod by the closet's internal width and by what it will carry: the published range across the rods we cover runs from 2.33 lb to 22 lb, and a rail of shirts is nearer the top of that than people assume (tension rod weight limits). Step 4: use the floor and the space under the bed
Closet floors collect shoes and then chaos. Anything that stacks and pulls out -- a low shelf unit, drawers, boxes -- turns that into storage. Step 5: the shelf above the rail
