Every other product on this site solves a renter's problem by finding somewhere to put things -- a rod that holds tension, a hook that holds 3 lb, a shelf that stands on the floor instead of the wall. A vacuum bag does the opposite. It makes the things themselves smaller, and in doing so it touches nothing: no wall, no door, no frame, no fitting. There is no lease clause anywhere that has an opinion about a bag.
Which makes it the easiest recommendation in this whole category, and the hardest one to compare. Because here is what the five packs on this page publish as their headline capacity:
80% compression. Ten sweaters. Four standard pillows. A king comforter and two pillows. 40 by 30 inches. Five claims, five different units, and not one of them can be checked against another.
The capacity claims do not compare, and that is the whole problem
This is the only product category on this site where the makers are not even answering the same question. A percentage describes how far something squashes. A garment count describes what goes in. A dimension in inches describes the bag. They are three different measurements and no listing publishes all three.
The one that is actually useful is the dimension, because it is the only figure you can check against the space you are trying to fill. A compressed bag has to live somewhere -- usually the gap under a bed or the shelf above a wardrobe rail -- and "80% smaller" tells you nothing about whether it fits there. Amazon Basics publishes a full size breakdown for its assorted pack; SpaceAid publishes both inches and contents. Hefty publishes neither dimension, only the garment count, which is why it sits lower here despite having the most human-readable claim on the page.
| Pack | Bag dimensions | Stated capacity | How you get the air out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Basics assorted 15-pack (DC-CBM15) | X-Jumbo 48 x 32; Jumbo 40 x 30; Large 32 x 24; Medium 28 x 20 in | 80% compression of bulky textiles | Hand pump included; valve takes a vacuum hose |
| Amazon Basics Jumbo 6-pack (DS-CBJ6) | 40 x 30 in | 80% compression of bulky textiles | Hand pump included; valve takes a vacuum hose |
| SpaceAid X-Large 3-pack | 27.5 x 39.5 in | 4 standard pillows, or 1 full/twin/queen bedding set | Any standard vacuum cleaner |
| Hefty Shrink-Pak 4 Large (8000) | Not published | 10 sweaters or sweatshirts, or a standard decorative pillow | Vacuum or press by hand |
| Hefty Shrink-Pak 3 Jumbo | Not published | Two standard pillows and a king comforter | Vacuum or press by hand |
How these are ranked
Published dimensions first, because that is the only figure that answers "will this fit where I need to put it". Then stated capacity, weighted toward claims a person can picture. Then how the air comes out, which decides whether the pack works in a flat with no vacuum cleaner. Then price per bag. The full method is here. We have not tested any of these; every figure is somebody else's published number.
The pump in the box is for the small bags
This is the detail that catches people, and the honest thing is that the makers say it themselves -- quietly, at the bottom of the listing.
Both Amazon Basics packs include a hand pump. Both listings also carry a note recommending you use a vacuum cleaner for the Large, Jumbo and X-Jumbo bags. Read those two facts together and the position is clear: the included pump is realistically for the medium bags, and the big bags -- the ones most people buy these for -- want a real vacuum.
That matters more in a rental than it sounds, because plenty of small flats do not have a vacuum cleaner with a hose, and some have no vacuum at all. If that is you, the Hefty bags are the answer on this page: they are the only ones that state you can seal them by pressing the air out by hand, no appliance involved.
Where the compressed bag actually goes
Compressing a comforter does not store it. It turns a bulky object into a flat heavy one, and the flat heavy one still needs a home. In a rented flat there are three realistic places, and the bag dimension decides which.
Under the bed. The usual answer, and the reason the 40 by 30 inch jumbo size exists -- compressed flat it is close to the footprint of an under-bed gap. If the gap is too shallow, that is a solvable problem: bed risers publish 2,640 lb a set and buy you two to five inches of clearance. Our under-bed storage guide covers the rigid boxes for everything that should not be squashed.
The shelf above the wardrobe rail. Usually the most wasted space in a rented bedroom. A 27.5 by 39.5 inch bag suits this better than a 40 by 30 one. Apartment closet organization covers what else belongs up there.
The top of a portable wardrobe. If your flat has no built-in closet at all, the units in best portable closets have a top shelf that a compressed bag sits on neatly.
What not to put in one
The listings here are all positive about what fits and silent about what does not, so this section is the judgment of the category rather than a published figure, and it is worth stating plainly.
Anything with structure you need to keep. A tailored coat, a suit, a structured bag. Compression is indifferent to shape and a garment that relies on its shoulder will not come back the same.
Anything you will want next week. Opening a vacuum bag is a commitment: you have to re-pump the remainder. These are for the half of your wardrobe that is genuinely out of season, not for routine storage. For that, the boxes and bins in under-bed storage open and close freely.
Anything damp. Sealing moisture into an airtight bag for six months is the one way to turn a storage solution into a laundry problem. Everything goes in dry.
What we would skip
A pack that publishes no dimensions, if you have a specific gap to fill. Two packs here do exactly that. They are good bags with the clearest capacity claims on the page, but if you are buying to fit a 6 inch under-bed space you are buying blind.
Buying jumbo only. The single most common mistake in this category. A few jumpers in a 40 by 30 inch bag do not compress -- they slide into a lump at one end and the bag stays mostly full of nothing.
Treating the compression percentage as a specification. 80% is a claim about ideal bulky textiles. A bag of t-shirts is already mostly fabric and will not approach it.
The rest of the bedroom
Compression is one half of a small-bedroom answer and furniture is the other. If the wardrobe itself is the constraint, no-drill closet systems covers rod doublers and hanging towers that add hanging space without a screw, and closet rod doublers goes deeper on the one product that genuinely doubles a rail.
And if the problem is that there is no closet at all, which is common enough in older rented flats, garment racks and portable closets are the two pages that solve it without touching the building.
The picks in full
Every figure below is published by the manufacturer or the retailer listing named beside it. Where a figure is not published, the row says so rather than carrying an estimate.

#1 · Publishes all four bag sizes
Amazon Basics Vacuum Storage Bags, Assorted 15-Pack (DC-CBM15)
Amazon Basics · Best for a first purchase, when you do not yet know which size you need
9.0
out of 10
The only pack here that publishes every bag size it contains, which is the one thing you actually need to know before you buy a mixed set.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bag sizes | (2) X-Jumbo 48 x 32 in; (5) Jumbo 40 x 30 in; (4) Large 32 x 24 in; (4) Medium 28 x 20 in | Amazon Basics DC-CBM15 product listing |
| Compression claim | Stated to compress bulky textiles down 80% | Amazon Basics DC-CBM15 product listing |
| Seal | Heavy-duty double-zip seals and a triple-seal turbo valve | Amazon Basics DC-CBM15 product listing |
| Pumping | Hand pump included; valve also connects to a standard vacuum cleaner hose. The listing suggests using a vacuum cleaner for Large, Jumbo and X-Jumbo bags | Amazon Basics DC-CBM15 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Publishes the dimensions of all four sizes, so you can match a bag to a shelf or an under-bed gap before ordering
- A mixed pack answers the question most people get wrong, which is that one size does not suit both coats and comforters
- The valve takes a standard vacuum hose, which is the only way the big bags compress properly
What it does not cover
- 15 bags is more than most renters need, and the medium sizes tend to go unused
- The 80% figure describes bulky textiles in ideal conditions, not a jumper that is mostly already flat
- Costs more than a single-size pack for bags you may never open
Coming off the wall
There is nothing to remove. A vacuum bag touches no wall, no door and no fitting, which is why this is the one storage category a lease has no opinion about.

#2 · Jumbo 40 x 30 in, six bags
Amazon Basics Vacuum Storage Bags, Jumbo 6-Pack (DS-CBJ6)
Amazon Basics · Best for comforters, blankets and bulky bedding
8.8
out of 10
Six jumbo bags at 40 by 30 inches, which is the size that actually solves a renter's problem: winter bedding off the bed and under it.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bag dimensions | 40 x 30 in, Jumbo, 6 bags | Amazon Basics DS-CBJ6 product listing |
| Compression claim | Stated to compress bulky textiles down 80% | Amazon Basics DS-CBJ6 product listing |
| Material | Thick layers of PA and PE film, stated to improve tear and wear resistance | Amazon Basics DS-CBJ6 product listing |
| Pumping | Hand pump included; the listing states a vacuum cleaner is suggested for Large, Jumbo and X-Jumbo bags | Amazon Basics DS-CBJ6 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 40 x 30 in flat is close to the footprint of an under-bed gap, which is where a compressed comforter should end up
- Six bags handles a full seasonal swap in one go
- Same published film construction and valve as the larger assorted pack, at a lower price per bag
What it does not cover
- Jumbo only -- too big for a few jumpers, which will slide around inside and barely compress
- The included hand pump is slow on a bag this size, which the listing itself effectively concedes
- Thin film means a snagged zip ruins a bag, and they are not sold individually
Coming off the wall
Nothing to remove, nothing to repair, nothing to explain at the final inspection.
Skip this if
Skip this if your storage gap is a shelf rather than an under-bed space. A 40 by 30 inch bag compressed flat is an awkward shape for a cupboard.

#3 · Size and capacity both published
SpaceAid Jumbo Vacuum Storage Bags, X-Large 3-Pack
SpaceAid · Best for a single seasonal bedding swap on a budget
8.7
out of 10
The one pack that publishes both numbers -- the bag size in inches and what it holds -- and the cheapest way into the category.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bag dimensions | 27.5 in W x 39.5 in D (70 x 100 cm), 3 X-Large bags | SpaceAid product listing |
| Published capacity | Each bag stated to fit 4 standard pillows, or 1 full/twin/queen bedding set | SpaceAid product listing |
| Material and seal | Thick PA and PE with double-zip seals and a triple-seal turbo valve | SpaceAid product listing |
| Pumping | Works with any standard vacuum cleaner; no hand pump stated as included | SpaceAid product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Publishes dimensions and capacity together, which no other pack here manages
- Cheapest pack on this page by a clear margin
- 27.5 x 39.5 in is a more shelf-friendly footprint than the 40 x 30 jumbo
What it does not cover
- No hand pump stated, so you need a vacuum cleaner -- a real constraint in a small flat
- Three bags only, and one size
- SpaceAid publishes no compression percentage, so there is no figure to compare against the 80% claims
Coming off the wall
Nothing to remove.

#4 · 10 sweaters a bag, stated
Hefty Shrink-Pak Vacuum Storage Bags, 4 Large (Model 8000)
Shrink-Pak · Best for off-season clothes, when you want to know how much fits
8.6
out of 10
The only maker here that tells you capacity in garments rather than inches -- 10 sweaters a bag -- which is the number people are actually trying to work out.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published capacity | Each large bag stated to hold 10 sweaters or sweatshirts, or a standard decorative pillow | Hefty Shrink-Pak 8000 product listing |
| Pack | 4 Large bags | Hefty Shrink-Pak 8000 product listing |
| Sealing | Pack, seal, then vacuum or press; stated reusable | Hefty Shrink-Pak 8000 product listing |
| Bag dimensions | Not published on the listing; only the packaging size is given | Hefty Shrink-Pak 8000 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- A capacity figure in garments is far more useful than a percentage, and nobody else here publishes one
- Press-to-seal works without a pump at all, which matters if you do not own a vacuum cleaner
- A four-pack is about the right number for one wardrobe's seasonal swap
What it does not cover
- Does not publish the bag dimensions, so you cannot check it against your shelf or under-bed gap before buying
- No pump supplied, where both Amazon Basics packs include one
- '10 sweaters' depends entirely on the sweaters, and chunky knitwear will not get near it
Coming off the wall
Nothing to remove. The bag is the whole system.

Skip this if you are storing bedding rather than clothes. The large size tops out at a decorative pillow and a comforter needs the jumbo version.

#5 · A king comforter and two pillows
Hefty Shrink-Pak Vacuum Storage Bags, 3 Jumbo
Shrink-Pak · Best for a king comforter you only use half the year
8.4
out of 10
The jumbo version of the same honest approach: it tells you a bag holds two standard pillows and a king comforter, which you can picture.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published capacity | Each jumbo bag stated to accommodate two standard pillows and a king comforter | Hefty Shrink-Pak jumbo product listing |
| Pack | 3 Jumbo bags | Hefty Shrink-Pak jumbo product listing |
| Sealing | Pack, seal, vac or press; stated reusable | Hefty Shrink-Pak jumbo product listing |
| Bag dimensions | Not published on the listing | Hefty Shrink-Pak jumbo product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Capacity stated as a king comforter plus two pillows, which is the clearest claim in the category
- Three bags is usually enough for a whole winter bedding set
- Seals by pressing as well as pumping
What it does not cover
- Again no published bag dimensions, which is the figure you need for a specific gap
- Most expensive per bag of the packs here
- A king comforter at full compression is heavy and unwieldy to move once sealed
Coming off the wall
Nothing to remove.

Questions people actually ask
Do vacuum storage bags actually save space?
For bulky textiles, yes -- both Amazon Basics packs here state 80% compression for items like comforters and blankets. The caveat is what you put in. The figure describes bulky, air-filled textiles; a bag of t-shirts is already mostly fabric and will compress far less. The useful test is whether the item is bulky because of trapped air or bulky because of material.
What size vacuum storage bag do I need?
Match the bag to the space it will be stored in, not to the pile of clothes. Amazon Basics publishes all four of its sizes -- X-Jumbo 48 x 32 in, Jumbo 40 x 30 in, Large 32 x 24 in and Medium 28 x 20 in -- and SpaceAid publishes 27.5 x 39.5 in. A jumbo bag compressed flat is roughly an under-bed footprint; a smaller bag suits a wardrobe shelf.
Do you need a vacuum cleaner for vacuum storage bags?
For the large sizes, in practice yes. Both Amazon Basics packs include a hand pump and both listings still recommend using a vacuum cleaner for Large, Jumbo and X-Jumbo bags. SpaceAid states it works with any standard vacuum cleaner and lists no pump. The Hefty Shrink-Pak bags are the exception here: they state you can seal them by pressing the air out by hand.
Are vacuum storage bags allowed in a rental?
There is nothing to allow. A vacuum bag attaches to no wall, door, frame or fitting, leaves no adhesive and needs no hardware, so it raises none of the questions a lease is concerned with. It is the one storage product on this site with no removal step at all.
How many sweaters fit in a vacuum storage bag?
Hefty is the only maker here that publishes a garment figure, stating 10 sweaters or sweatshirts for each of its large bags, or a standard decorative pillow. Every other pack on this page publishes either a compression percentage or bag dimensions instead, which is why the capacity claims in this category cannot be compared directly.
Can you store a comforter in a vacuum bag?
That is the main use. Hefty states its jumbo bag takes two standard pillows and a king comforter; SpaceAid states its X-Large bag takes four standard pillows or one full, twin or queen bedding set. Store it dry, and expect the compressed result to be flat and heavy rather than small.
What should you not put in a vacuum storage bag?
Anything whose shape matters -- tailored coats, suits, structured bags -- because compression does not respect structure. Anything you will want again soon, since opening one means re-pumping the rest. And anything even slightly damp, because an airtight bag will keep moisture in for as long as it is sealed.
