Best Christmas Storage for Small Apartments

Two numbers decide this and neither is the one on the front of the box: the bag's own dimensions, and the size of a compartment rather than how many there are.

Christmas is the largest single storage event of the year in a small apartment. A tree that was nine feet tall in December has to become an object you can live with in February, and a box of glass has to survive eleven months somewhere it will not get stood on.

The category that solves this is cheap, enormous, and sold on two numbers that do not mean what they appear to mean. "Fits a 9 ft tree" is a height claim, not a volume. "Stores 128 ornaments" is a claim about compartment size, not capacity. Read both the way the makers actually publish them and the choice gets simple.

The short answer

For a tree, ignore the height on the front and find the bag's own dimensions -- the 9 ft bags here publish 60 x 20 x 30 in and 65 x 16 x 30 in, and the 12 ft one publishes 22 x 22 x 72 in. For ornaments, find the compartment size: two of these boxes publish a 3 in limit and one publishes none at all. Then measure where it has to live.

A tree height is not a volume

Every tree bag in this category is sold by the height of tree it takes. That number tells you almost nothing on its own, because a disassembled tree is not its height -- it is three or four sections of hinged branches whose packed bulk depends on how dense the tree is, and nobody publishes that.

What the makers do publish, when they publish anything, is the size of the bag. For the same stated 9 ft tree: BALEINE's flat bag is 60 x 20 x 30 in and BALEINE's own rolling bag is 65 x 16 x 30 in -- five inches longer and four narrower, for an identical claim. The 12 ft container from Santa's Bags is 22 x 22 x 72 in and gets there by standing the tree up instead of laying it down.

TreeKeeper is the one maker that publishes the condition attached to its claim. Its large upright container is stated to fit most trees up to 9 ft and over 6 ft wide -- and then adds that trees over 7 1/2 ft will need the top section removed and stored at the base of the bag. That is the honest version of what every "9 ft" claim in this category means: it fits, in the sense that all the pieces end up inside.

So the order of operations is: pack the tree down the way you actually pack it, measure that pile, and compare it against a published bag dimension. A bag that publishes no dimensions at all is asking you to trust a height.

An ornament count is a compartment size in disguise

"Stores up to 128 ornaments" sounds like twice the box that "64" is. It is not. It is a bigger box cut the same way, and the published figures show it plainly.

Simple Houseware publishes default compartments of 3 x 3 x 3 in and a box of 25.5 x 13 x 13 in -- about 4,300 cubic inches for 128 ornaments. Hearth & Harbor publishes 64 ornaments in a 13 x 13 x 12 in box, which is about 2,030 cubic inches. Divide either one through and you get roughly the same 32 to 34 cubic inches per ornament, because both are built around the same standard bauble.

Which means the count is not a quality. It is a size. The number that actually decides whether a box works for you is the compartment, and only two of the three publish it: Simple Houseware states 3 x 3 x 3 in with room for the hook, and the budget QIHANS box states compartments fitting balls up to 3 x 3 in. Hearth & Harbor publishes no compartment dimension at all and describes its dividers as adjustable for any size, which is a sentence rather than a figure.

Where it goes is the constraint, not what it costs

All of this is cheap. None of it is small. In a one-bedroom apartment the binding constraint is the place the thing lives for eleven months, and the four options are not interchangeable.

Under the bed: not for the tree

Worth saying plainly, because it is the first place people look. The tree bags here are 16 to 20 inches deep. The containers on our under-bed storage page publish heights of 5 to 7 inches, which is what a bed frame actually clears. A packed tree bag does not go under a bed, and no amount of squashing changes that. Ornament boxes at 12 to 13 inches tall do not either.

The closet floor, standing up

This is what the upright containers are for. The Santa's Bags frame turns six feet of tree into a 22 inch square of floor, which is the single most efficient thing in this category for a small apartment -- and the reason it costs several times what a bag costs.

The top shelf, folded

The argument for the fabric bags and the folding ornament boxes is what they do in January. The BALEINE bags and both folding ornament boxes are stated to fold flat when empty, so they take a few inches of shelf rather than remaining a box-shaped object all year. A rigid tub does not do this, and in a small apartment that is a real cost.

What these listings get wrong about themselves

Three contradictions turned up while collecting the figures above, and all three are the kind that cost a buyer money.

BALEINE publishes two fabric weights for one bag. The title of the flat 9 ft bag says 900D Oxford; the listing text says 600D Oxford canvas. Fabric weight is most of what you are paying for in a tree bag, and the listing cannot decide.

The dimensions field is frequently not the product. TreeKeeper's large upright container -- a thing that swallows a 9 ft tree -- has a dimensions field reading 28 x 16 x 7 in at 0.55 lb, which is the folded carton. The QIHANS ornament box publishes 1 x 1 x 1 in. Where a listing's copy and its dimensions field disagree, the copy is usually the product and the field is usually the packaging.

Nobody publishes a weight limit. Not one container here states what it will carry, which matters most for the rolling bags: a packed 9 ft tree is heavy, and the handles and the zips are what fail. The closest thing to a published answer is construction -- wrap-around rather than stitched handles, a steel frame, 600D fabric -- which is why those appear in the picks above.

What we would skip

Any tree bag that publishes only a height. On a page where two bags for the same 9 ft tree differ by five inches in length and four in width, a height on its own is marketing.

Buying the biggest ornament count you can find. The count scales with the box, not with the value. Work out how many ornaments you own, add the ones you will buy this year, and buy that box -- the extra 64 compartments are 12 more inches of closet.

A rigid tub, in a small apartment. Hard boxes protect better and we would use one in a garage. In a one-bedroom where the empty container has to live somewhere too, a box that folds into itself wins on the eleven months it is not in use.

Storing a tree bag where it gets stood on. No maker publishes a crush rating, so the top of a closet with nothing above it is the right answer, and under the pile is not.

The rest of the seasonal problem

Christmas storage comes in three pieces and this page covers two of them. The third is the paper, which is decided by a different measurement entirely: wrapping paper storage ranks that category by the published roll-length ceiling, which runs from 30 to 48 inches and is the reason most gift wrap organizers are longer than the paper people actually buy.

For the rest of the year, the same closet problem is handled by vacuum storage bags for out-of-season clothing and apartment closet organization for the closet as a whole.

The picks in full

Every figure below is published by the manufacturer or the retailer listing named beside it. Where a figure is not published, the row says so rather than carrying an estimate.

BALEINE 9 ft Rolling Christmas Tree Storage Bag (Baleine-1178)

BALEINE · Best for a 9 ft tree that has to be dragged out of a closet

8.8

out of 10

Publishes a real bag size rather than just a tree height, and puts three wheels under it -- which is what you want when the thing lives at the back of a closet eleven months a year.

Material and fixings600D Oxford fabric, inside fixed buckles to hold the tree, reinforced carry handlesBALEINE Baleine-1178 product listing
Weight6.7 lb empty; folds flat when not in useBALEINE Baleine-1178 product listing

What the specification gets you

  • Publishes the bag dimensions, not just the tree height it claims to take
  • Three wheels and side handles, which is the difference between dragging and carrying 30 lb of tree
  • Inside buckles compress the sections so the bag is not half full of air

What it does not cover

  • 600D Oxford is the lighter of the two fabric weights in this category
  • 65 in long needs a run of clear floor -- it will not go under most beds
  • Wheels add height, so it does not lie as flat on a closet shelf as a plain bag

Coming off the wall

Nothing to remove. It is a bag that folds flat for eleven months.

Skip this if

Skip this if the bag has to live on a high shelf rather than on the floor. Wheels only help a bag you can roll, and this one is 65 inches long.

Simple Houseware 128 Christmas Ornament Storage Box

#2 · Publishes 3 in compartments

Simple Houseware 128 Christmas Ornament Storage Box

Simple Houseware · Best for a big collection of standard baubles

8.7

out of 10

The only ornament box here that publishes the size of its compartments as well as the number of them, which is the difference between a specification and a headline.

Dimensions and closure25.5 in L x 13 in W x 13 in H; dual-zippered fabric lid, two rear pockets and a front card slotSimple Houseware ornament box product listing

What the specification gets you

  • Publishes the compartment size, so you can measure one ornament and know the answer before ordering
  • 48 dividers with 7 slots each means the grid genuinely reconfigures for odd shapes
  • Rear pockets and a labeling slot, which is what stops it becoming an unlabeled box in a closet

What it does not cover

  • Cardboard dividers in a fabric shell -- strong in shape, but not a crush-proof container
  • 25.5 in long is the biggest footprint of the ornament boxes here
  • 128 is the count at 3 in spacing; resize the compartments for larger ornaments and that number drops fast

Coming off the wall

Nothing to remove. It is a box.

Skip this if

Skip this if your ornaments are mostly large or irregular. At that point you are buying a 25.5 in box to hold far fewer than 128 things, and a smaller box reconfigured the same way costs less.

#3 · Cheapest bag with real dimensions

BALEINE 9 ft Christmas Tree Storage Bag (BALEINE-439)

BALEINE · Best for a 9 ft tree stored flat, on a budget

8.3

out of 10

The cheapest bag here that publishes its own dimensions -- though its listing cannot decide whether the fabric is 600D or 900D, and that is the figure you are paying for.

What the specification gets you

  • Wrap-around handles rather than stitched tabs, which is where a loaded tree bag usually tears
  • 60 x 20 x 30 in published, so you can check it against the shelf before ordering
  • Dual zippers and a wide opening, so the tree goes back in without a fight

What it does not cover

  • The title and the listing text publish different fabric weights, 900D and 600D
  • No wheels, and a packed 9 ft tree is a two-person lift
  • 20 in deep is wider than the rolling version, so it eats more shelf

Coming off the wall

Nothing to remove.

Santa's Bags Rolling 12 Ft Christmas Tree Storage Bag (SB-10491-RS)

Santa's Bags · Best for storing a big tree upright in a closet corner

8.1

out of 10

A steel frame on ball-bearing casters with compression straps inside -- the only container here that can be stored standing up, which in an apartment is the whole argument.

What the specification gets you

  • Stores upright, which turns 72 inches of tree into a 22 in square of closet floor
  • A steel frame and compression straps mean the bag holds its shape instead of slumping
  • Ball-bearing casters rated as non-marring, which matters on a rented floor

What it does not cover

  • By far the most expensive option here, several times the price of a plain bag
  • 26 lb empty before a tree goes in
  • 22 x 22 x 72 in is a large permanent object -- it does not fold away like a fabric bag

Coming off the wall

Hearth & Harbor · Best for a medium collection in an apartment with no spare shelf

Questions people actually ask

What size Christmas tree storage bag do I need for a 9 ft tree?

Do not buy on the height claim alone, because bags carrying the same claim are not the same size. The two 9 ft bags here publish 60 x 20 x 30 in and 65 x 16 x 30 in. Pack your tree down the way you normally pack it, measure that pile, and compare it against a published bag dimension. TreeKeeper is the only maker here that publishes the condition behind its claim, noting that trees over 7 1/2 ft need the top section removed and stored at the base.

Can a Christmas tree bag go under a bed?

No. The tree bags on this page are 16 to 20 inches deep, and under-bed containers are built at 5 to 7 inches because that is what a bed frame clears. The realistic homes for a packed tree are a closet floor, the top of a closet, or a storage room -- and an upright rolling container is the one that uses the least floor, at 22 inches square.

How many ornaments does an ornament storage box hold?

As many as its compartment size allows, which is the figure to look for rather than the headline count. Simple Houseware publishes 3 x 3 x 3 in compartments and 128 ornaments in a 25.5 x 13 x 13 in box; QIHANS publishes compartments taking balls up to 3 x 3 in and a count of 64; Hearth & Harbor publishes 64 in a 13 x 13 x 12 in box with no compartment dimension at all. Divide the published counts into the published box volumes and they all work out at roughly 32 to 34 cubic inches per ornament, so the count is really just the box size.

What if my ornaments are bigger than three inches?

Then every published count on the box is a best case rather than a specification. The dividers on these boxes are adjustable, so you resize the compartments and the capacity drops accordingly -- a 128 box might hold half that. Buy on the compartment figure and on how finely the dividers reconfigure: Simple Houseware publishes 48 interlocking dividers with 7 slots each, which is the most adjustable grid here.

Is a rolling Christmas tree bag worth it?

In an apartment, usually yes, for a reason that has nothing to do with the tree. A packed 9 ft tree is heavy and awkward, and the bag spends eleven months at the back of a closet -- wheels are what get it out without dragging it across a rented floor. The budget version is a fabric bag with swivel casters; the expensive version adds a steel frame that lets the whole thing stand upright, which is the real space saving.

Should I use a hard plastic tub or a fabric bag for Christmas decorations?

A hard tub protects better and stacks more confidently, so it is the right answer for a garage or a basement. A fabric bag or a folding box is the right answer in a small apartment, because it folds flat when it is empty and does not occupy a shelf for the eleven months it is not in use. Both BALEINE bags and both folding ornament boxes here are stated to fold away.

How much weight can a Christmas tree storage bag hold?

None of the containers we checked publishes a figure, so we do not quote one. What the listings publish instead is construction: wrap-around rather than stitched handles on one BALEINE bag, a steel frame functioning as a dolly plus inner compression straps on the Santa's Bags container, and 600D Oxford fabric on both rolling bags. Those are the things that fail on a loaded tree bag, so they are what the ranking rewards.
