Yes, you can take the closet doors off a rental and hang a curtain instead, and it is one of the few rental changes that is genuinely reversible -- a hinged or bifold door lifts out in a couple of minutes and the only thing you must not lose is the hardware. For most reach-in closets the answer is a tension rod inside the opening and a pair of 84 in panels; the Supforce rod is the one to buy because it publishes 66 lb and spans 84 in.
The catch is not the curtain. It is where a pair of six-foot doors lives for the next two years, and that is the part people discover after the doors are off.
The short answer
Is it allowed?
Taking a door off its hinges does not alter the building. No hole is made, no finish is changed, nothing is cut. In lease terms it sits in the same category as taking down a landlord's shower curtain: a temporary change to a removable fitting, so long as the fitting goes back.
Two things turn that into a problem, and both are about the hardware rather than the door. If the hinge screws go missing, you are handing back a closet somebody has to re-hang at your cost. And if the doors get damaged while they are stored -- warped against a radiator, or bent under something heavy -- the deposit conversation is about the door, not the curtain. Our guide to what your lease actually says covers how these conversations usually run, and the short version is that asking first costs nothing.
Where the doors go, which is the actual problem
A pair of standard bifold panels is roughly 80 in tall. That is taller than any wardrobe and longer than most beds are wide. The three places they realistically fit in a rental:
Flat under the bed, which works if the bed has clearance -- bed risers buy it, and the bed riser page has the published lift heights. Upright at the back of the closet itself, behind the hanging clothes, which costs about 3 in of depth and is the tidiest answer. Upright behind a wardrobe or a chest of drawers, where they are invisible but can bow if they lean at a shallow angle for months.
If none of those exist, this is the change to skip. A pair of doors propped in the corner of a small bedroom is worse than the doors being on the closet.
Sizing the rod, which is published arithmetic
A tension rod inside a closet opening is the same product this site covers for windows, doing an easier job: no sideways pull, no daily yanking, just a static fabric load. Tension rod sizing has the full method, and the short version is to measure the internal width of the opening jamb to jamb and pick a rod whose range has your measurement comfortably inside it rather than at the end of its travel.
Typical reach-in closet openings run 48 to 72 in, and a double closet can reach 96 in. That puts most of them beyond the 28-48 in rods sold for windows, which is why the Supforce at 17 to 84 in is first on this page.

| TALITARE tension rod | 48 to 84 in | Not published | Tension on 1.8 in pads, or brackets |
| Kenney Strafford spring tension rod | 28 to 48 in | 22 lb | Spring tension |

How long the curtain should be
A standard interior opening is 80 in tall. Rod-pocket panels sold as 84 in hang from a rod set a little above that line and finish at or just past the floor line of the opening, which is what you want: a curtain that stops 4 in short reads as a mistake from across the room.
Width is where people under-buy. For a curtain to hang in folds rather than as a flat sheet it wants to be about one and a half to two times the opening width in total fabric. A 48 in opening therefore takes roughly 72 to 96 in of panel -- which is one 52 in panel stretched flat, or two panels hanging properly. Two is the right answer, and it is also the only way to open the closet from the middle.
Blackout fabric is the popular choice here for a reason that has nothing to do with light: it is heavier, so it hangs straight and does not billow every time the bedroom door opens. The trade is that it is heavier for the rod to hold, which is where the published 66 lb and 22 lb figures stop being trivia. Our blackout curtain page covers what the light-blocking percentages actually mean.
The complaint everyone has afterwards
Closet curtains gape. Two flat panels on a rod drift apart in the middle and the closet shows through the gap, which is the single most common regret with this change.
There are three answers. Buy more width, so the panels overlap in the middle rather than meeting. Buy a panel with a closure -- the gonnrly set has magnets down the meeting edge, which is the only product we found that treats this as a design problem rather than the buyer's problem. Or accept it, which is a perfectly reasonable position in a closet whose contents are tidy.
When this does not work
A sliding closet door runs in a track that is usually screwed to the head of the opening. The doors lift out easily enough, but the track stays, and a tension rod has nowhere to sit under it without fouling the track. You can hang the curtain from the track itself with slide hooks in some cases, but it is no longer a two-minute job.
A closet with no jamb -- an opening finished with drywall returns rather than a timber frame -- gives a tension rod nothing solid to push against. Tension works by pushing outward, and a paper-faced drywall edge will dent and then release. This is the same failure mode described in how much weight a tension rod holds.
A very wide double closet beyond 84 in needs either two rods meeting at a center post you do not have, or a different approach entirely. In that case the room divider page covers freestanding systems that stand in front of the opening instead of inside it.
What else changes in that closet
Taking the doors off makes the closet part of the room, which means the inside of it is now on display. That usually prompts the next three jobs: organizing the closet itself without fixings, doubling the rod so the hanging is not a single sagging line, and matching the hangers, which is the cheapest visual upgrade in this entire hub now that everyone can see them.
The picks in full
Every figure below is published by the manufacturer or the retailer listing named beside it. Where a figure is not published, the row says so rather than carrying an estimate.

#1 · Best for a wide opening: 66 lb published, spans 84 in
Supforce No-Drill Tension Closet Rod, 17-84 in
Supforce · Best for a wide reach-in opening where the curtain is heavy or lined
9.0
out of 10
66 lb published across a span that reaches 84 in, which is the only rod here that covers a double closet opening and states what it holds.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published load | Stated to support up to 66 lb | Supforce no-drill closet rod product listing |
| Span | Adjustable from 17 to 84 in | Supforce no-drill closet rod product listing |
| Diameter | 1.3 in, published in the product dimensions | Supforce no-drill closet rod product listing |
| Grip | High-friction rubber end caps stated to stop the rod slipping or rotating under load | Supforce no-drill closet rod product listing |
| Fitting | Twist-to-tension, stated as needing no tools, screws or hardware | Supforce no-drill closet rod product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 66 lb published is the highest figure of any tension rod on this site
- 84 in covers a double or triple closet opening in one piece
- 1.3 in diameter is thick enough that curtain rings run on it without binding
What it does not cover
- No published figure for the friction it needs, so a painted or papered frame is still an unknown
- At 84 in extended, the published load is almost certainly a short-span figure
- Silver finish only, which not every curtain suits
Coming off the wall
Untwist and lift out. Friction only -- nothing is fixed into the frame.
Skip this if
Skip this if the closet frame is a flimsy applied architrave rather than solid jamb. Tension works by pushing outward, and 66 lb of push has to land on something.

#2 · Best all-in-one: 45 x 80 in panel, magnets, rod included
gonnrly Magnetic Closet Door Curtain, 45 x 80 in
gonnrly · Best for a single closet opening you want to actually close
8.2
out of 10
The purpose-built version: a closet-width panel with magnets down the center so it closes rather than hangs open, supplied with its own rod.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Panel size published | 45 in wide by 80 in long | gonnrly magnetic closet curtain product listing |
| Closure | Built-in magnets stated down the meeting edge, so the two halves hold closed rather than hanging apart | gonnrly magnetic closet curtain product listing |
| Fold | Accordion-pleated, stated to fold compactly to one side when open | gonnrly magnetic closet curtain product listing |
| Fabric | Light-blocking fabric stated, described as wipe-clean and dust-shielding | gonnrly magnetic closet curtain product listing |
| Weight published | Not published, which matters because the supplied rod has no published load either | gonnrly magnetic closet curtain product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 80 in long is cut for a closet opening rather than a window, so no hemming
- The magnets solve the real complaint about closet curtains, which is that they gape
- Rod included, so the sizing question is answered in the box
What it does not cover
- No published weight for panel or rod, so the pair cannot be load-checked
- 45 in covers one opening; a double closet needs two and a seam
- Accordion pleating holds dust in a way a flat panel does not
Coming off the wall
Unhook the panel and lift the rod out. Nothing is fixed to the frame.
Skip this if
Skip this if your opening is wider than 45 in. Two panels on one rod will meet in the middle in the wrong place.

#3 · Best fabric: 52 x 84 in, machine washable, 85-99% opaque
NICETOWN Blackout Curtains, 52 x 84 in (2 panels)
NICETOWN · Best for a living room, or a bedroom where you can live with dawn light at the edges
8.7
out of 10
The only panel here that publishes a light-blocking range, and the number is the useful part: 85% to 99%, not 100%. Machine washable, which its own stablemate is not.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Light blocking | 85% to 99% light blocking, stated on the listing | NICETOWN product listing |
| Panel width | 52 in wide x 84 in long per panel; 2 panels | NICETOWN product listing |
| Header | Grommet top, 1.6 in inner diameter | NICETOWN product listing |
| Care | Machine washable below 86F, mild detergent, no bleach, low-temperature ironing | NICETOWN product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Publishes an actual range -- 85% to 99% -- which is more honest than a bare "blackout" claim
- Machine washable, unlike the sewn-liner panel from the same brand
- The cheapest way here to cut most of the light in a rented room
What it does not cover
- The bottom of that range, 85%, is room-darkening rather than blackout, and the listing does not say which colors land where
- A grommet header leaves a gap at the top of each pleat that no fabric specification can fix
- Triple-weave fabric alone is a weaker light barrier than a sewn-in liner
Coming off the wall
Comes down with the rod and goes in a suitcase. Nothing about a curtain panel is a deposit question.

#4 · Best for a shallow jamb: 1.8 in contact pads published
TALITARE Tension Curtain Rod, 48-84 in
TALITARE · Best for a closet opening with a shallow jamb
8.0
out of 10
Publishes the two end-cap diameters -- 1.8 in on tension alone, 3.07 in with the brackets -- which is the figure that tells you whether it will sit inside your closet frame.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Span | Adjustable from 48 to 84 in by a knob | TALITARE 48-84 in product listing |
| Contact pad published | 1.8 in anti-slip round pads when tension-mounted; the optional brackets are published as 3.07 in | TALITARE 48-84 in product listing |
| Published load | Not published anywhere in the listing | TALITARE 48-84 in product listing |
| Fitting routes | Three stated: tension alone using the pads, drilled brackets, or adhesive brackets -- only the first is renter-safe | TALITARE 48-84 in product listing |
| Material | Stainless steel with a baked paint finish, stated waterproof and rust-proof | TALITARE 48-84 in product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Publishes the contact pad size, so you can check it lands on solid jamb
- 48 to 84 in covers most reach-in closet openings
- Rust-proof finish means it can later be reused as a shower rod
What it does not cover
- No published load at all, which is the figure a curtain-on-a-rod decision needs
- Two of its three fitting routes involve brackets a renter cannot use
- Knob adjustment is less positive than a twist-lock under a sideways pull
Coming off the wall
Untwist and lift out, if you use the tension route. The bracket routes are not reversible.
Skip this if
Skip this if the curtain is a heavy blackout pair. With no published load, the honest answer is to use the rod that states 66 lb.

#5 · Best for a narrow opening: 22 lb published, 28-48 in
Kenney Strafford Spring Tension Rod (28-48 in)
Kenney · Best for inside-mount curtains on a 28-48 in opening
9.0
out of 10
22 lb published on a spring tension rod is an outlier figure, and it is the reason to read ratings per model rather than assume tension rods are all the same.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Rated load | 22 lb maximum weight | Kenney Strafford product listing (Lowe's) |
| Span | Adjustable 28 to 48 in | Kenney Strafford product listing (Lowe's) |
What the specification gets you
- 22 lb published is far above the 2 to 7 lb figures on the light twist-and-fit rods
- Inside mount means no bracket, no trim requirement and no contact with the wall face at all
- The span range covers the standard bedroom window without a cut
What it does not cover
- A tension rod holds by friction against two surfaces, so a painted reveal that is slick or textured changes the outcome and no rating covers that
- Inside mount only -- it cannot hang wider than the opening, which is how you lose light control at the edges
Coming off the wall
Twist to shorten and lift out. On a painted reveal, the rubber end caps can leave a burnished ring where they have been under compression -- it usually wipes off.
Skip this if
Skip this if you need the curtain to overhang the window opening. Tension lives inside the reveal by definition; overhang needs a bracket.

Questions people actually ask
Can I remove closet doors in a rental?
Generally yes, because taking a door off its hinges alters nothing permanent -- no hole, no cut, no changed finish. The two things that turn it into a deposit problem are losing the hardware and damaging the doors in storage. Bag every screw and pivot, tape the bag inside the closet rather than putting it in a drawer, and store the doors flat or upright somewhere they cannot bow.
What size tension rod do I need for a closet opening?
Measure the internal width of the opening jamb to jamb, then pick a rod whose adjustment range has that figure comfortably inside it rather than at the very end of its travel. Most reach-in closets are 48 to 72 in, which is wider than the 28-48 in rods sold for windows. The Supforce on this page covers 17 to 84 in and publishes 66 lb; the Kenney Strafford covers 28 to 48 in and publishes 22 lb.
How long should a closet curtain be?
For a standard 80 in opening, 84 in panels are the right buy: the rod sits a little above the frame line and the fabric finishes at or just past the bottom of the opening. For width, aim for one and a half to two times the opening in total fabric so the curtain hangs in folds -- a 48 in opening wants roughly 72 to 96 in of panel, which in practice means two panels rather than one.
Will a tension rod hold closet curtains?
A curtain is an easier load for a tension rod than most people assume, because it hangs straight down and is not yanked sideways the way a shower curtain is. Published loads among the rods we cover run from 22 lb to 66 lb, and a pair of blackout panels is a few pounds. The real variables are the span -- a rod near the top of its range holds less than its headline figure -- and whether the opening has solid jambs for it to push against.
How do I stop a closet curtain gaping in the middle?
Buy more width so the two panels overlap rather than meet, or buy a panel designed to close. The gonnrly set on this page has magnets down the meeting edge, which is the only product we found that addresses it in the design rather than leaving it to the buyer. Both answers are better than clipping the panels together, which makes the closet awkward to open.
Does this work with bifold or sliding closet doors?
Bifolds, yes -- they lift off a top and bottom pivot, and the opening left behind is the same one a tension rod fits. Sliding doors are harder: the doors come out easily but the track is usually screwed to the head of the opening and stays, leaving a tension rod nowhere clean to sit. With a track still in place the curtain has to hang from the track itself, which is a different job.
Is a curtain warmer or dustier than closet doors?
Dustier, slightly, because fabric does not seal the way a door leaf does and a woven panel holds dust itself -- an accordion-pleated panel more than a flat one. Temperature is a non-issue in a closet. The practical trade is that a curtain is washable and a door is not, so a machine-washable panel such as the NICETOWN set is worth preferring over a wipe-clean one if the closet is in a bedroom.
