First Apartment: What You Actually Need
A buy order rather than a wish list, with the published figure beside each item so nothing arrives that cannot do the job.

The short answer
Week one: curtains, a shower curtain and rod, and one multi-pack of adhesive hooks. Week two: a tension rod for the closet and an over-door rack. Later, once you know the space: freestanding shelving and under-sink storage. Buy in that order and nothing sits in a box waiting for a room to make sense.
Almost every first-apartment list is a list of objects. This is a sequence, because the mistake is not buying the wrong things so much as buying everything at once, before you know where the light comes in, which door is always open, and which corner is dead space.
Week one: privacy and the daily layer
Curtains, and the hardware that holds them
The first real problem in an empty apartment is that the windows are bare. Before buying anything, look at the top corner of the window: wooden trim between 1/2 and 1 inch wide means a bracket system publishing 20 lb, with the curtain hanging outside the opening. No trim means a tension rod inside the reveal, and the published figures there range from 2.33 lb to 22 lb, so weigh the curtains before choosing (the roundup, the sizing method).
A shower curtain and rod
Measure the alcove and buy a rod whose range brackets it comfortably. One shower rod we cover publishes 7.5 lb total, which is a curtain and a wet liner and very little else -- worth knowing before you plan to hang a caddy from it too.
One multi-pack of adhesive hooks
Buy the 3 lb medium size in a multi-pack rather than a mixed set. It covers most of what a new renter hangs, and a cheap 0.5 lb hook mounted somewhere out of sight is also the best way to find out whether your walls hold adhesive at all before you commit to anything heavier (the hook roundup).
Week two: the closet and the doors
- A tension rod for the closet. Fitted below the existing rail it roughly doubles hanging space for shirts. Measure the internal width first.
- An over-door rack. Measure the door edge -- 1.25 to 2.25 inches across the products we cover, and no single one spans that. Published per-hook loads run 2.2 to 5 lb (the picks).
- Under-bed containers. The largest free volume you own.
Later: once the apartment has told you what it needs
Wait a few weeks before buying shelving. You will know by then where the dead corner is, which wall the sofa actually lives against, and whether the kitchen or the bathroom is the real bottleneck. Then:
- Freestanding shelving -- 11 to 66 lb per shelf published, and the answer to almost every "where does this go" question (picks).
- An under-sink rack, chosen after taking the three measurements in under-sink clearance.

What not to buy in the first month
- Matched sets of anything. You do not yet know the dimensions of the problem.
- Wall-mounted shelving. Adhesive publishes 2 to 5 lb for a shelf. If it has to hold books, that is a freestanding purchase you have not made yet.
- Suction anything, for the bathroom. No published load figures we could source, and a mechanism that a hot shower undermines.
- More hooks than you have places for. They are cheap, which is exactly how a wall ends up with nine of them.
And the part nobody plans for
Removal. Everything on this page comes off, but the order and the technique matter -- and the time to read about that is now, not on the last day of the tenancy. The move-out removal checklist is two minutes and it is the difference between getting your deposit back and arguing about it.

What the specification gets you
- 22 lb published is far above the 2 to 7 lb figures on the light twist-and-fit rods
- Inside mount means no bracket, no trim requirement and no contact with the wall face at all
- The span range covers the standard bedroom window without a cut
What it does not cover
- A tension rod holds by friction against two surfaces, so a painted reveal that is slick or textured changes the outcome and no rating covers that
- Inside mount only -- it cannot hang wider than the opening, which is how you lose light control at the edges
Coming off the wall
Twist to shorten and lift out. On a painted reveal, the rubber end caps can leave a burnished ring where they have been under compression -- it usually wipes off.
Skip this if
Skip this if you need the curtain to overhang the window opening. Tension lives inside the reveal by definition; overhang needs a bracket.

What the specification gets you
