Measure the thickness of your cabinet door before you buy any of these. The published limits run from 0.86 in to 1 in, and two of the six publish no limit at all. The Tiyafuro is the pick: it publishes the most generous figure in the category at under 0.95 in, and it ships both a door hook and two adhesive hooks, so a door outside that range is not a returned parcel.
A bin that hangs on the inside of the cabinet door is close to the ideal rental purchase -- no screws, no adhesive required, no floor space used, and it leaves with you. It is also the product people most often buy without measuring anything.
The short answer
A cabinet door is not a room door
This is the thing that catches people, and it catches them because the rest of the over-the-door world has trained them wrong.
The over-door racks, hooks and organizers this site covers elsewhere publish door limits of 1.25 to 2.25 in -- see door thickness and clearance for the full range. Those are room doors: a standard interior door is 1 3/8 in and a solid-core one is 1 3/4 in.
A kitchen cabinet door is roughly half that. The published limits here are 0.86 in, 0.95 in and 1 in, which is why a hook designed for a bedroom door will not close on a cabinet, and why a bin sized for a cabinet will swing loose on a bedroom door. The two categories look identical in a product photo and do not interchange.
| Bin | Door limit published | Capacity | Height | Mounting routes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiyafuro 2.4 gal | Under 0.95 in | 2.4 gal | 11.6 in | Door hook plus 2 adhesive hooks supplied |
| LALASTAR 1.8 gal (7 L) | Under 0.86 in | 1.8 gal | 7.7 in deep x 9.8 in | Door, adhesive pad, or screws |
| Glad Roomate 12 L | Not published | 3.1 gal (12 L) | 17.1 in | Door hook, adhesive hanger, or freestanding |
| SRTFINE collapsible | Up to 1 in | 1.6 gal | 8.6 in (folds to 2.36 in) | Door hook only |
| OYSIR bag holder | Not published | A grocery bag; 10 lb published | 8.3 in, 1.6 in deep | Door, or adhesive base |
| LEGUO 2.6 gal | Not published | 2.6 gal (10 L) | 12 in | Door, or adhesive mount plate |
The second measurement: what is already in the cabinet
The door limit decides whether the bin hangs. The cabinet decides whether it closes.
A hanging bin swings into the cabinet when the door shuts, so it has to clear whatever is in there. Under a kitchen sink that is a P-trap, a shut-off valve, and frequently a garbage disposal, which is the single biggest consumer of that space -- under-sink clearance covers how to measure around all of it, and it is the same exercise that governs expandable under-sink racks.
Height is where this bites, and the spread is large. The published heights here are 8.3, 8.6, 9.8, 11.6, 12 and 17.1 in. That last one -- the biggest-capacity bin from the one established brand in the category -- is more than five inches taller than anything else on this page, and its own listing tells you to measure your space first without saying what the figure needs to be.
Depth matters too, and it is the figure nobody thinks about. The bag holder is 1.6 in deep and barely intrudes; the shallowest bin is 7.7 in. In a cabinet already holding cleaning bottles, a 7.7 in bin on the door and a bottle on the base will meet in the middle.
Capacity and fit pull against each other
Every extra gallon has to go somewhere, and in a cabinet it goes down. The published range is 1.6 to 3.1 gallons across heights of 8.6 to 17.1 in, and the relationship is close to linear.
The practical consequence is that you cannot buy your way out of the trade. A 3.1 gallon bin behaves like a real kitchen bin and needs a cabinet most rentals do not have under the sink. A 1.6 gallon bin fits almost anywhere and needs emptying far more often. The two mid-size options, at 2.4 and 2.6 gallons on 11.6 and 12 in, are where most kitchens land.
The one escape is the collapsible bin, which publishes 2.36 in folded. That is a genuinely different answer: it is 1.6 gallons when you need it and almost nothing when you do not. It only works if the bin is empty much of the time, which in a kitchen it is not -- but in a bathroom, an RV or a second cabinet it is the smartest thing here.
The bag problem, which is most of the daily annoyance
A hanging bin is small, which means the liner is small, which means the liner slips down inside the bin and the scraps go in behind it. Two makers address it and publish what they did.
LALASTAR publishes a retention ring that holds the bag against the inner wall. LEGUO publishes a side bag-fixing hole for the same job. SRTFINE goes a different way and publishes a hidden built-in compartment for spare bags, so the refill lives where the bin is, with 120 supplied.
The bag holder sidesteps the whole thing: there is no bin, just a stainless hoop that holds a grocery bag open, published at 10 lb -- the only load figure anywhere in this category. With no lid it is a dry-waste and recycling product rather than a food-scraps one, which is a real limit rather than a quibble.
What we would skip
Any of these before measuring the cabinet door. Three publish a limit, and the gap between 0.86 in and 1 in is the difference between fitting and not.
The tallest bin under a sink you have not measured. At 17.1 in it is competing with the P-trap for the same space, and the trap does not move.
A lidless bag holder for food scraps. It is an excellent recycling and packaging bin and the wrong product for anything that smells.
Assuming an over-door organizer from elsewhere in the house will fit. Room doors publish 1.25 to 2.25 in and cabinet doors publish around 1 in. They are different products.
The rest of the cabinet
The bin is one job inside a cabinet that usually has several. Under-sink organizers work around the plumbing the bin has to miss, and kitchen cabinet organizers covers the rest of the cabinets on the same no-screws principle.
For the whole-kitchen version of the problem, renter-friendly kitchen cabinet organization is the room-level playbook, and adhesive shelf liners covers the surface underneath it all.
The picks in full
Every figure below is published by the manufacturer or the retailer listing named beside it. Where a figure is not published, the row says so rather than carrying an estimate.

#1 · Best overall: publishes a 0.95 in door limit and ships both mounts
Tiyafuro 2.4 Gallon Hanging Trash Can
Tiyafuro · Best for a standard kitchen cabinet door, measured first
9.0
out of 10
Publishes the most generous door limit in the category -- under 0.95 in -- and ships both a door hook and two adhesive hooks, so it fits whichever cabinet you actually have.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Door thickness published | Door thickness should be less than 0.95 in (2.5 cm) -- the widest published limit in this group | Tiyafuro 2.4 gallon product listing |
| Capacity | 2.4 gallon | Tiyafuro 2.4 gallon product listing |
| Size | 10.2 x 6.3 x 11.6 in | Tiyafuro 2.4 gallon product listing |
| Mounting supplied | 1 door hook, 2 adhesive hooks and 20 bags included; stated to fit most cabinet and pantry doors | Tiyafuro 2.4 gallon product listing |
| Lid | Lid stated to contain odor, with no charcoal filter to replace | Tiyafuro 2.4 gallon product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Publishes a door limit, which half this category does not
- Both mounting routes in the box, so a thick door is not a returned parcel
- 11.6 in tall still clears most under-sink plumbing
What it does not cover
- ABS plastic, and the lid is the part that takes the daily abuse
- No published load for the hook or the adhesive
- 2.4 gallon fills faster than people expect in a kitchen
Coming off the wall
Lift it off the door. The adhesive hooks are an alternative route, not a requirement.
Skip this if
Skip this if your cabinet door is thicker than 0.95 in. The maker publishes that number precisely so you can check it, and a hook that does not seat lets the bin swing.

#2 · Best for a thin door: 0.86 in published, plus a bag retention ring
LALASTAR 1.8 Gallon Hanging Trash Can (7 L)
LALASTAR · Best for a thin cabinet door, and bags that keep falling in
8.6
out of 10
The tightest published door limit here at under 0.86 in, which makes it the one most likely not to fit -- and the only bin that publishes a retention ring to stop the bag sliding down.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Door thickness published | Door thickness should be less than 0.86 in -- the tightest published limit in this group | LALASTAR 7 L product listing |
| Capacity and size | 7 L (1.8 gallon); 9.8 x 8.5 x 7.7 in | LALASTAR 7 L product listing |
| Bag retention | A retention ring stated to keep the bag from sliding down inside the bin -- the only such feature published here | LALASTAR 7 L product listing |
| Mounting routes | Hangs on a cabinet or pantry door, or wall-mounts under a sink or inside a cabinet with an adhesive pad or screws | LALASTAR 7 L product listing |
| Material | BPA-free plastic stated as stain and odor resistant and dishwasher safe | LALASTAR 7 L product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Dishwasher safe, which nothing else here claims and a scraps bin genuinely needs
- The bag retention ring addresses the most common daily annoyance
- At 7.7 in deep it is the shallowest bin here, so it swings less into the cabinet
What it does not cover
- 0.86 in is a tight door limit and rules out plenty of cabinet doors
- 1.8 gallon is small for a main kitchen bin
- No published load for any of its three mounting routes
Coming off the wall
Lift off the door. The adhesive and screw routes are alternatives you do not have to take.

#3 · Best capacity: 3.1 gallons -- and 17.1 in tall
Glad Roomate Under Counter Waste Bin, 12 L
Glad · Best for a tall cabinet, or hanging on the outside of a door
8.5
out of 10
Nearly twice the capacity of anything else here from the one established brand in the category -- and 17.1 inches tall, which is the figure that decides whether it fits under your sink at all.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 12 L (3.1 gallon) -- the largest in this group | Glad Roomate product listing |
| Size | 7 in L x 9.5 in W x 17.1 in H -- also the tallest here by more than 5 in | Glad Roomate product listing |
| Mounting | An over-the-cabinet-door hook, or a supplied adhesive hanger stated to let you set a custom hanging height; also works freestanding | Glad Roomate product listing |
| Door thickness published | Not published. The listing names no door limit anywhere | Glad Roomate product listing |
| Lid | Dual lid with a flip-back mode and a slide-front mode that holds the bin open | Glad Roomate product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 3.1 gallon is a real kitchen bin rather than a scraps caddy
- The adhesive hanger solves the case where the door hook fouls a shelf
- The only listing here that publishes its own 'measure your space first' warning
What it does not cover
- 17.1 in tall will not fit under a great many sinks, which the listing acknowledges but does not quantify
- No published door thickness, from the brand most likely to be bought on name
- Capacity and clearance pull in opposite directions, and this is the far end of that trade
Coming off the wall
Lift off the hook. The adhesive hanger is optional and goes on the door, not the floor.
Skip this if
Skip this if it is going under a sink you have not measured. At 17.1 in it is competing with the P-trap for the same space, and the trap usually wins.

#4 · Best for a full cabinet: folds to a published 2.36 in
SRTFINE Collapsible Hanging Trash Can, 1.6 Gallon
SRTFINE · Best for a cabinet with no room to spare, or an rv
8.4
out of 10
Folds to a published 2.36 inches when empty, which is the answer when the cabinet is already full of everything else.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Collapsed thickness published | Shrinks to as thin as 2.36 in when not in use | SRTFINE collapsible bin product listing |
| Door thickness published | Stated for doors typically up to 1 in thick | SRTFINE collapsible bin product listing |
| Capacity and size | 1.6 gallon; 7.8 x 4.7 x 8.6 in in use | SRTFINE collapsible bin product listing |
| Bag storage | A hidden built-in compartment for spare bags; 120 bags supplied | SRTFINE collapsible bin product listing |
| Material | PP with TPR, made by integrated molding and stated as odorless | SRTFINE collapsible bin product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 2.36 in folded is the only published answer to a cabinet that is already full
- The 1 in door limit is the most forgiving stated figure here
- A built-in bag compartment means the refill is where the bin is
What it does not cover
- 1.6 gallon is the smallest bin on this page
- A folding mechanism is one more thing to fail on something handled daily
- No published load
Coming off the wall
Lift it off and fold it flat. No tools, screws or adhesive stated at all.
Skip this if
Skip this if the bin will be full most of the time. Collapsing is the entire argument for it, and a permanently loaded bin never collapses.

#5 · Best for a narrow cabinet: 1.6 in deep, 10 lb published
OYSIR Stainless Steel Trash Bag Holder (SS-1)
OYSIR · Best for the narrowest cabinet, and anyone who reuses grocery bags
8.3
out of 10
Not a bin at all -- a stainless hoop that holds a grocery bag open, and the only product on this page that publishes what it can carry: 10 lb.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published load | Stated to weigh under 0.3 lb and hold up to 10 lb -- the only published load figure in this group | OYSIR SS-1 product listing |
| Size | 7.3 x 5.5 x 1.6 in -- 1.6 in deep, so it barely intrudes into the cabinet | OYSIR SS-1 product listing |
| Mounting | Hangs over a cabinet, kitchen or pantry door, or sticks to a smooth surface with the supplied adhesive base; the holder lifts off the base | OYSIR SS-1 product listing |
| Material | Stainless steel, stated not to fade or fracture the way chrome does | OYSIR SS-1 product listing |
| Door thickness published | Not published | OYSIR SS-1 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- The only published load anywhere in this category
- 1.6 in deep fits cabinets that no bin on this page would clear
- Stainless rather than plastic on something handled with wet hands daily
What it does not cover
- No lid, so odor is entirely down to the bag
- A grocery bag is not a liner and tears under anything sharp
- No published door thickness
Coming off the wall
Lift it off the door, or lift the holder off its adhesive base and leave the base behind until you peel it.
Skip this if

#6 · Most capacity per inch of height -- but no door limit published
LEGUO 2.6 Gallon Hanging Compost Bin (LG-S04-L1)
LEGUO · Best for daily food scraps where 1.8 gallon runs out too fast
8.2
out of 10
More capacity than the thin-door bins at a height that still clears most cabinets -- and it publishes no door limit at all, which is the gap.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity and size | 2.6 gallon (10 L); 10 x 6 x 12 in | LEGUO LG-S04-L1 product listing |
| Door thickness published | Not published. The listing says only that it hangs over compatible cabinet doors | LEGUO LG-S04-L1 product listing |
| Mounting routes | Over a cabinet door, or an adhesive mount plate for smooth clean surfaces | LEGUO LG-S04-L1 product listing |
| Lid | Two opening modes stated -- flip up for wide access or slide for quick scraps | LEGUO LG-S04-L1 product listing |
| Bag fixing | A side bag-fixing hole stated to hold the liner against the inner wall | LEGUO LG-S04-L1 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 2.6 gallon at 12 in tall is the best capacity-to-height ratio here
- Two lid modes, like the much larger branded bin
- Sold in a range, so the same design exists at 3.3 gallon if this is too small
What it does not cover
- No published door thickness -- 'compatible cabinet doors' is not a measurement
- No published load for the adhesive plate route
- Plastic lid mechanisms are the first thing to break on a daily-use bin
Coming off the wall
Lift off the door, or peel the adhesive plate off the surface it went on.

Questions people actually ask
How thick a cabinet door will a hanging trash can fit?
The published limits are under 0.86 in, under 0.95 in and up to 1 in from the three makers that state one; the other three publish nothing. That is much thinner than the room doors most over-door hardware is built for, which publish 1.25 to 2.25 in. Measure the edge of your cabinet door with a ruler before ordering -- it is the figure the whole purchase turns on.
Will a hanging bin fit under my kitchen sink?
It depends on height and on what is already in there. These publish heights of 8.3 to 17.1 in, and under a sink the bin is competing with a P-trap, shut-off valves and often a garbage disposal. Measure the clear height from the cabinet floor to the underside of the sink, and the clear depth from the door to the nearest pipe, before choosing a size.
How big should a cabinet-door trash can be?
Capacity and fit pull against each other: the published range is 1.6 to 3.1 gallons across heights of 8.6 to 17.1 in, close to linearly. The 2.4 and 2.6 gallon bins at 11.6 and 12 in tall are where most kitchens land. A 3.1 gallon bin behaves like a real kitchen bin and needs a cabinet most rentals do not have; a 1.6 gallon one fits anywhere and needs emptying far more often.
What if there is no cabinet door to hang it on?
Three of these publish an adhesive alternative: an adhesive hanger that lets you set a custom height, an adhesive mount plate, and an adhesive base that the holder lifts off. All the usual adhesive conditions apply -- smooth, clean, fully cured surfaces -- and none of the three publishes a load figure for the adhesive route, so treat it as the lighter option rather than an equal one.
How do you stop the bag slipping down inside a hanging bin?
Buy one that addresses it. One publishes a retention ring that holds the liner against the inner wall and another a side bag-fixing hole for the same job. A third stores 120 spare bags in a hidden built-in compartment so the refill is where the bin is. If you already own the bin, a bulldog clip on the rim does the same job less elegantly.
Do these damage rental cabinets?
The door-hook route does not bond to anything -- it lifts off and leaves nothing, which is why it is the renter-preferred option. The two things to watch are the hook rubbing the painted edge of the door over time, which is the same wear any over-door product causes, and the adhesive routes, which stick to the cabinet surface and publish no removal method on any of the three products that offer them.
Can I use one of these for recycling rather than trash?
Yes, and the lidless bag holder is arguably better at it: dry recycling does not need an odor seal, and a grocery bag in a stainless hoop at a published 10 lb handles cans and packaging well. For food scraps the lidded bins are the right product -- several are sold as compost caddies and publish odor-sealing lids with no filter to replace.
