Best Over-the-Toilet Storage

The wall above a toilet is the largest piece of unused vertical space in a small bathroom, and the product category built for it is enormous. It is also a category with a problem that almost nobody writing about it mentions.

Most freestanding over-toilet units ship with an anti-tip kit, and the maker tells you to fix it to the wall. SONGMICS states it plainly: the kit is included and the unit "should be mounted to the wall ... for safe use". That is a drill, two holes and a wall anchor -- in a rental bathroom, quite possibly in tile. The whole category is sold as a no-installation fix and its own safety instructions say otherwise.

So this page ranks on the thing that actually decides it for a renter: how the unit stays upright, and what each maker publishes about it.

Two mechanisms, and a real trade between them

Everything sold for this space is one of two things.

A freestanding etagere straddles the toilet on four feet. It is cheaper, it publishes more capacity -- 33 lb a shelf across the three that state a figure -- and it is tall, narrow and top-heavy, which is why the anti-tip hardware is in the box.

A tension-mounted rack presses between the floor and the ceiling, exactly like a floor-to-ceiling shower caddy or a tension rod rotated upright. It cannot tip, because it is braced against the ceiling. It publishes less -- 20 to 22 lb a shelf -- and it costs more. It needs no fixing whatsoever.

That is the trade in one line: you pay roughly a third of the published shelf capacity, and some money, to avoid putting a screw in a rental wall. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on your lease and your walls, and it is a decision this page would rather you made deliberately.

How these are ranked

Whether it needs a wall fixing comes first, because on this site that is the criterion that decides whether a product belongs in a rental at all. Then published load, weighted by how completely the maker states it -- a per-shelf figure plus a total beats a per-shelf figure alone. Then the fit measurements, because an over-toilet unit that does not clear your tank is scrap. Then what the room does to the material, which in a bathroom is not a minor consideration. Measure three things before you buy anything

1. The height of your cistern

This is the measurement that decides fit, and exactly one product here publishes its counterpart: the Zenna unit states that its bottom shelf sits 34.25 inches from the ground. Measure from the floor to the top of your tank, add an inch or two so the lid can come off without dismantling the shelf, and compare.

A tall or angled modern cistern is the usual failure. So is a tank with a lid you need to lift to reach the flush valve -- if the bottom shelf sits an inch above the lid, you cannot service the toilet without moving the whole unit.

2. The ceiling, if you are buying tension

The two tension racks publish 92 to 116 inches and 91 to 114 inches respectively. Measure floor to ceiling at the spot the unit will stand, not in the middle of the room, because bathrooms in converted buildings very often have a dropped ceiling over the plumbing.

And check what the ceiling is made of. A tension fitting braced against a suspended tile grid is outside anything either maker rates, and that is the same caution that applies to every tension product on this site.

3. The depth, against the door swing

These run 9.4 to 10.4 inches deep. In a bathroom where the door opens inward toward the toilet -- which is most small bathrooms -- that depth is the difference between a unit you walk past and one you walk into. Open the door fully and measure what is left.

The anti-tip question, answered honestly

We would rather set out the options than pretend this is simple.

Fit the hardware. It is two small screws into drywall above the tank, and on most leases a filled and touched-up screw hole is the same conversation as a picture hook. Whether your lease treats it that way is a document question rather than a product one, and can you drill in a rental takes the clause apart. This is the safest option and we would take it in most apartments.

Buy tension instead. No hardware, no holes, no conversation -- and 20 to 22 lb a shelf rather than 33. If the wall above your toilet is tile, if the lease is strict, or if there are small children in the home and you are not willing to run an unbraced tall unit, this is the answer and it is why it ranks first.

Run a freestanding unit unbraced. We are not going to recommend it. A 68-inch frame weighing 14 lb empty, loaded top-heavy with towels, on a hard tiled floor, in the room where people grab things while off balance, is the exact scenario the manufacturer put the kit in the box for. If you do it anyway, load the bottom shelves heavily and keep the top one nearly empty.

What the room does to the material

A bathroom is the hardest environment in the home for storage furniture, and the three materials here age very differently.

Bamboo handles humidity well and looks better than anything else in the category, but it wants wiping down rather than being left wet. Coated steel wire does not hold water at all, which is a real advantage, and it lets small bottles tip and lids fall through, which is a real disadvantage -- a cheap liner fixes it. MDF board is the one to think hardest about: it is in the cabinet pick, it looks the most finished, and if it gets repeatedly damp it swells and does not recover. In a bathroom with no extractor fan or window, that is a matter of when rather than whether.

It is the same humidity argument that runs through why adhesive fails in bathrooms, applied to furniture instead of glue.

What we would skip

The unbranded units that dominate these search results. There are dozens of over-toilet racks in stock at attractive prices from sellers with no manufacturer behind them, no spec sheet and no published load. We have not ranked any of them, for the same reason we do not rank the marketplace adhesive corner shelves in best no-drill corner shelves: a capacity that appears only in a listing title is a marketing claim, not a figure.

We would also skip the wire unit if you want to know what a shelf holds. It is the best documented here on fit -- it is the only one publishing the tank clearance -- and it publishes nothing at all on capacity, while three competitors publish 33 lb.

The rest of a rental bathroom

Over-toilet storage solves the dry half of the room. The wet half is a different problem with different mechanisms, because adhesive is asked to do its hardest job in there -- ranked picks are in best no-drill shower caddies and best no-drill bathroom shelves.

And the cabinet under the sink is usually emptier than it looks once you have measured around the trap -- under-sink clearance is that measurement, step by step. Between the toilet, the shower and the cabinet, most rental bathrooms have more storage available than the room suggests.
