Over-the-Door Weight Limits

Two of the four racks we cover publish a load figure. This page is about both halves of that sentence.

The short answer

Published over-door figures are given per hook, not per rack: 5 lb per hook on the Umbra Estique (14 hooks) and 2.2 lb per hook on the Yamazaki steel hanger. Two other products we cover publish no load figure at all. There is no published total capacity for any of them, so plan hook by hook.

What is published

Published over-the-door load figures
ProductPublished loadGiven asHooks
Umbra Estique5 lbMaximum per hook14
Yamazaki Smart Over-the-Door Hanger2.2 lb (1 kg)Per hook; no total publishedWide, multiple hooks
Yamazaki Ply rack (wood)Not published--Rack
Spectrum Janisse hookNot published--Single hook unit
What these numbers assume: Manufacturer figures where they exist. A per-hook rating assumes the load hangs from that hook alone, distributed normally, on a door the product actually fits. No maker here publishes a total rack capacity, a shock-load figure, or a rating for a rack on an out-of-range door.

Why per-hook matters more than it sounds

Fourteen hooks at 5 lb is not a 70 lb rack. It is fourteen separate 5 lb decisions, and the way people actually load these things -- three coats on one hook by the door -- puts all the weight on one of them. The rating describes a hook, so load it like one.

It also means that where per-hook figures differ by more than double, as they do between the Umbra and the Yamazaki, the practical difference is large: 2.2 lb is a robe and a towel, 5 lb takes a coat. Neither is wrong; they are different products for different jobs, and the number is the only thing that tells you which.

What the figure does not cover

  • Shock loads. Yanking a bag off a hook applies far more than its weight for an instant. No published over-door figure describes that.
  • An ill-fitting door. A rack on a door outside its published thickness range is unrated regardless of what the hook is capable of -- the load path is wrong.
  • The door itself. Every published figure is about the rack. Hollow-core doors are light and the hinges are not designed around 40 lb of coats swinging on the far side; a door that starts to bind or sag is telling you something the rack's rating never addressed.
  • Total capacity. Nobody publishes one, so nobody can honestly quote you one.

How this compares to the other options

Per-hook, over-door hardware sits above adhesive hooks and below freestanding storage:

Published capacity across the renter-proof categories
CategoryPublished figureNeeds
Adhesive hook0.5 to 7.5 lb per hookA smooth, cured, solid wall
Adhesive picture strips15 to 20 lb per setA smooth, cured, solid wall and a flat-backed object
Over-the-door hook or rack2.2 to 5 lb per hook, where publishedA door within the published thickness range
Freestanding shelving11 to 66 lb per shelfFloor space
What these numbers assume: Figures collected from the manufacturer and retailer listings cited across this site. The comparison is between different things -- per hook, per set, per shelf -- which is exactly why reading a single "how much does no-drill storage hold" number off any one page is misleading.

The ranked picks for this category are in best over-the-door organizers; the adhesive equivalents are in adhesive hook weight limits; and if the load you need is above all of it, that is freestanding shelving.

Umbra Estique Over-the-Door Organizer

Umbra · Best for a bedroom or bathroom door doing the work of a closet

9.3

out of 10

5 lb per hook across 14 hooks, and Umbra publishes the door thickness it fits. Both numbers, from the manufacturer, which is the whole reason it wins here.

What the specification gets you

  • 5 lb per hook is the highest published per-hook figure we found in this category, by a wide margin
  • 14 hooks at that rating is 70 lb of published capacity spread over a door that has none of it drilled
  • Umbra publishes the door thickness, the per-hook load and the dimensions -- three numbers, all findable

What it does not cover

  • 1.5 in is a real limit: a 1-3/4 in solid door is outside it unless you use the attachable hooks
  • Wooden pegs are kinder to knitwear than bare steel, but they also reduce how much a hook can grip a thin loop

Coming off the wall

Lift it off the door. Nothing is fixed to anything.

Skip this if

Skip this if your door is 1-3/4 in thick, which many solid-core and bathroom doors are. Measure the door edge first -- it is a ten-second measurement that decides the purchase.

Yamazaki Home Smart Over-the-Door Hanger (Wide, Steel)

Yamazaki Home · Best for a tidy door in a small bathroom or bedroom

8.4

out of 10

2.2 lb per hook and a 1.375 in door limit, both published. Small, quiet, and specified precisely enough that you know before you buy whether it fits.

What the specification gets you

  • Published per-hook rating and published door limit, from the manufacturer, in the same place
  • Cushioned contact face is the detail that stops an over-door hook scuffing a rental door
  • Low profile, so the door still closes against a frame with a stop

What it does not cover

  • 2.2 lb per hook is a towel and a robe, not a coat
  • No published total capacity, so the sensible reading is per-hook only

Coming off the wall

Lift off. The cushioned contact face is the part that protects the door's paint.

Skip this if

Skip this for coats or anything over about 2 lb. The Umbra Estique publishes more than twice the per-hook figure.

Questions people actually ask

How much weight can an over-the-door hook hold?

Where published, 2.2 to 5 lb per hook across the products we cover. Two of the four publish no figure at all. There is no published total capacity for a whole rack from any of them.

Can I hang a winter coat on an over-door rack?

On a 5 lb per hook rack, generally yes -- on a 2.2 lb per hook one, that is over the published figure. Weigh the coat if you are unsure; wet outerwear is heavier than it looks.

Is the rating for the whole rack or per hook?

Per hook, in every case we could source. Fourteen hooks at 5 lb is fourteen separate 5 lb decisions, not a 70 lb rack, and people habitually load one hook with everything.

Can an over-door rack damage the door or its hinges?

Published figures describe the rack, not the door. Hollow-core doors are light, and a lot of weight swinging on the far side can make a door bind or sag over time. If the door starts to catch on the frame, take weight off it.

What if the manufacturer publishes no weight limit?

Treat it as light duty rather than unlimited, and put anything that matters on a product that publishes a figure. An unrated product is one you cannot make a decision about.
