Best Laundry Room Storage for Renters
Two routes that need no holes -- a cart that slides into the gap, or a frame that stands over the machines. Both are decided by a measurement, and one of them has a catch the listings bury.

A rented laundry space is usually a machine, a socket, and nothing else. No cupboard, no counter, no shelf -- and a wall you are not allowed to drill, which rules out every laundry-room idea on the internet in one go.
There are two routes that need no holes. A slim cart that rolls into the gap beside or between the machines, and a frame that stands over them, carrying its own weight on its own feet. Both are decided by a measurement rather than by a feature list, and the second one comes with a caveat the listings mention once and never repeat.
The short answer
The gap is the specification, and the listings disagree with themselves
A gap cart has exactly one job, which is to fit. Everything else about it -- tiers, hooks, wheels -- is decoration if it is a quarter of an inch too wide. So the published width is the spec, and in this category it is unusually unreliable.
SPACEKEEPER describes its cart as "4.75 in design" in the listing text while its dimensions field reads 4.9 in. SPACELEAD publishes 4.9 in in the copy and 5.1 in in the field, with the depth and height transposed on top of that. TEAMIX publishes 5.5 in in both places and is the only cart here that does. And the 7.1 in cart sold by Osivaex has a near-identical twin sold by Vivihomety -- the same bullet copy, word for word, down to the phrase about the fridge and the countertop -- where the listing text says 7.1 in and the dimensions field says 6.69 in.
None of those gaps between figures is large. All of them are larger than the margin you have in a five-inch slot. The practical rule is to take the biggest number any part of the listing publishes, then measure your own gap at its narrowest point -- which is rarely the front. It is usually the hose bib, the shut-off valve, or the baseboard that stops the cart two inches short of the wall.
What over-washer shelves do not put on the front of the box
The over-washer frame is the better answer when you have the room for it: it uses the dead air above the machines, it carries far more than a cart, and most of them add a hanging rod. It is also sold as freestanding, and that word is doing some work.
Three of the four over-washer units we looked at ship an anti-tip device that fixes to the wall. Homde states two anti-tip devices plus a rear X-shaped crossbar. Golpart states an anti-tip device and describes wall fixation in its assembly line. Ulif's larger U13 is the most explicit of all: "assembling the included anti-tip device on the wall to prevent falling".
The exception is the Ulif U11 Medium, whose listing publishes adjustable shelves and leveling feet and mentions no anti-tip device at all. That is an absence in the published specification rather than a guarantee -- but on a page about holes you are not allowed to make, it is the difference between a product designed to stand and a product designed to be screwed back.
| Product | Width published | Other dimensions | Load published | Wall fixing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ulif U11 Medium (over-washer) | 28.7 in inner width for the machines | 31.1 x 19.7 x 77.6 in | Not published | None stated |
| SPACEKEEPER SPKSC401B (cart) | 4.75 in in text, 4.9 in in the field | 15.3 in D x 38.7 in H | Not published | None -- it is a cart |
| Homde HS005-UT081 (over-washer) | 57.4 in in text, 59.44 in in the field; no inner width | 22.4 in D x 72.8 in H | 44 lb a shelf, 44 lb bar, 11 lb a hook, 308 lb total | 2 anti-tip devices stated |
| SPACELEAD SAKSC401W (cart) | 4.9 in in text, 5.1 in in the field | 15.3 in D x 38.7 in H; tiers 12.5 and 9.2 in | 30 lb a shelf | None -- it is a cart |
| TEAMIX KS404W (cart) | 5.5 in, published consistently | 15.7 in D x 31.5 in H | Not published | None -- it is a cart |
| Golpart EA_305B (over-washer) | 29.5 in overall; no inner width | 13.5 in D x 72 in H | 100 lb a shelf, 80 lb rod | Anti-tip device and wall fixation stated |
Only one maker tells you whether your machines fit
An over-washer frame has to straddle the machines, so the number that decides it is the clear width between the uprights. Almost nobody publishes it.
Ulif publishes it twice. The U11 Medium states a shelf inner width for washer and dryer of 28.7 inches. The larger U13 approaches it from the other side and states that the width of the washer and dryer must not exceed 29.9 inches, and tells you to check for a baseboard while you are at it.
Homde and Golpart publish neither. They publish an overall width -- 57.4 in and 29.5 in -- and then both say the same thing: measure your washer and dryer before buying. That is honest, but it leaves the buyer subtracting frame thickness from an overall figure and hoping.
So measure the pair as they sit: machine to machine, including the gap you need between them for the lids and the hoses, and allow for the fact that a machine is not flush to the wall once its hoses are connected. Then compare that against a published inner width if there is one, and treat an overall width as a number you cannot use.
The figures nobody in this category publishes
Three gaps are worth naming, because they change what you can plan for.
Cart loads. Only SPACELEAD publishes one, at 30 lb a shelf. SPACEKEEPER, TEAMIX and the 7.1 in carts publish nothing -- and detergent is heavy. A gallon jug on a plastic shelf with no published rating is the most common way one of these fails.
Anything about the spin cycle. No listing here publishes a word about vibration, which is the one force a laundry-room product is guaranteed to meet. The closest any maker comes is hardware: two of the carts publish braked casters, and the frames publish leveling feet and crossbars. That tells you the makers thought about movement even though none of them will put a figure on it.
Depth against a doorway. The frames here are 13.5 to 22.4 inches deep. In a laundry closet with a bi-fold door, the deep one does not let the door close, and no listing mentions it. Measure the door swing as well as the floor.
What we would skip
A wall-anchored frame, if the anchor is the plan. If you are going to use the anti-tip bracket, you are drilling -- at which point a proper wall shelf is cheaper and better. The over-washer frame earns its place when it stands on its own; buy it for that and keep the load sensible.
Any cart whose only published width is the one in the dimensions field. On this page that field has been wrong -- transposed, or disagreeing with the copy -- more often than it has been right.
A 38.7 in plastic cart loaded top-heavy. The tall budget carts are good at what they do, which is holding light, frequently-used things at hand height. Put the detergent on the bottom tier and the dryer sheets up top, not the other way round.
Adhesive hooks and shelves on laundry-room walls. Steam, temperature swings and the paint quality of a utility space are a bad combination for an adhesive bond. The same reasoning is set out in humidity and adhesive failure, and it applies here for the same reasons it applies in a bathroom.
The rest of the rented laundry
Storage is half the problem; drying is the other half, and in an apartment without an outdoor line it is usually the harder one. Clothes drying racks ranks the freestanding options on published drying length and footprint, which is the same measure- first exercise as this page.
The third object in this room is the one nothing on this page holds. Where to put an ironing board compares the over-door holders on the three figures only one maker publishes -- a 1 3/8 in door maximum, a 0.08 in door gap and 66 lb -- and makes the case for the tabletop board that removes the problem instead. If the gap carts above are what you are buying, the wider category is in rolling storage carts, where the published loads reach 225 lb.
If what you actually need is a shelf rather than a cart, no-drill shelving covers freestanding units by published load per shelf, from 11 to 66 lb. And if you are weighing up whether to put a hole in the wall at all, can you drill in a rental is the honest version of that question, including what a landlord can actually charge for.
The picks in full
Every figure below is published by the manufacturer or the retailer listing named beside it. Where a figure is not published, the row says so rather than carrying an estimate.

#1 · Publishes the opening: 28.7 in
Ulif U11 Medium Over Washer and Dryer Shelf, 3 Tiers
Ulif · Best for a laundry nook where the machines sit side by side
8.7
out of 10
The only shelf here that publishes the measurement that decides it -- 28.7 in of inner width for the machines to sit in -- instead of telling you to go and measure.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Inner width for the machines | 28.7 in stated as the shelf inner width for the washer and dryer | Ulif U11 Medium product listing |
| Overall dimensions | 31.1 in W x 19.7 in D x 77.6 in H; wire shelves stated at 31.1 x 11.8 in | Ulif U11 Medium product listing |
| Load | Not published. Carbon steel construction, 18.7 lb assembled | Ulif U11 Medium product listing |
| Fixing | Adjustable shelves and leveling feet are published; no anti-tip wall device is mentioned in this listing, unlike Ulif's larger U13 | Ulif U11 Medium product listing |
What the specification gets you
- Publishes the inner width -- 28.7 in -- which is the one number that decides whether it goes over your machines
- Hanging rod sits at the front of the shelves, so clothes do not block the storage behind them
- Leveling feet, which matters on the uneven floor a laundry nook usually has
What it does not cover
- 28.7 in of inner width is tight: a 30 in machine will not pass, and Ulif's own larger model caps its machines at 29.9 in
- Publishes no shelf load figure at all, where two shelves here publish 44 and 100 lb
- 77.6 in tall needs ceiling height a basement or a closet nook may not give you
Coming off the wall
Unbolt and carry it out. It stands on its own feet over the machines.

#2 · Narrowest published, 4.75 in
SPACEKEEPER 4-Tier Slim Rolling Storage Cart (SPKSC401B)
SPACEKEEPER · Best for the slot between a washer and the wall
8.5
out of 10
The narrowest published cart here, and the one most likely to clear a tight gap -- as long as you know which of its two published widths you are trusting.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Published twice and not the same: the listing text says 4.75 in, the dimensions field says 4.9 in | SPACEKEEPER SPKSC401B product listing |
| Overall dimensions | 4.9 in W x 15.3 in D x 38.7 in H per the dimensions field | SPACEKEEPER SPKSC401B product listing |
| Wheels | Four easy-glide casters, two with brakes; casters removable to use it as a 2 or 3 shelf countertop unit | SPACEKEEPER SPKSC401B product listing |
| Load | Not published. Plastic construction with snap-together assembly and four side hoops | SPACEKEEPER SPKSC401B product listing |
What the specification gets you
- The slimmest published figure in this group, which in a gap is the entire argument
- Casters come off, so the same unit works on a counter if the gap turns out too tight
- Two braked wheels, so it does not creep every time the spin cycle starts
What it does not cover
- Its own listing publishes 4.75 in and 4.9 in for the same cart -- in a 5 in gap that is the difference
- Plastic, and the only cart here with no published load at all
- 38.7 in tall on narrow casters is tippy once the top tier is loaded
Coming off the wall
It is a cart. Roll it out and the room is as you found it.
Skip this if
Skip this if your gap is comfortably wide. At 15.3 in deep it is shallower than the metal carts, so you give up usable shelf area to buy width you may not need.

#3 · 308 lb published, anti-tip included
Homde 5-Tier Over the Washer and Dryer Storage Shelf (HS005-UT081)
Homde · Best for carrying real weight above the machines
8.3
out of 10
The most completely specified unit on this page -- 44 lb a shelf, 44 lb on the bar, 11 lb a hook, 308 lb in total -- and the one whose anti-tip hardware a renter has to think about.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published load | 44 lb per shelf, 44 lb on the hanging bar, 11 lb per hook, stated to support up to 308 lb in total | Homde HS005-UT081 product listing |
| Overall dimensions | Published twice and not the same: the listing text gives 57.4 in L x 22.4 in D x 72.8 in H, the dimensions field gives 59.44 in wide | Homde HS005-UT081 product listing |
| Inner width for the machines | Not published. The listing says to measure the washer and dryer before buying | Homde HS005-UT081 product listing |
| Fixing | Two anti-tip devices and a rear X-shaped crossbar are stated as included; six adjustable feet; left or right installation | Homde HS005-UT081 product listing |
What the specification gets you
- The only published load set on this page that covers shelves, bar and hooks separately
- A rear X-crossbar as well as the anti-tip brackets, so the frame is braced before anything is screwed to the wall
- Five tiers plus a hanging bar is the most storage here by some distance
What it does not cover
- The included anti-tip devices fix to the wall, which is a hole in a wall you do not own
- Publishes no inner width, so whether it clears your machines is on you
- Its own listing publishes 57.4 in and 59.44 in for the width, and at 40.8 lb it is a two-person assembly
Coming off the wall
The frame lifts out, but the anti-tip brackets are the part to think about: they are a wall fixing, so plan on filler and touch-up paint.
Skip this if
Skip this if your lease makes wall holes a problem and you are not prepared to leave the anti-tip hardware off -- which the maker does not sanction, and which on a 72.8 in frame carrying 308 lb is a real decision, not a formality.

#4 · The only cart with a load figure
SPACELEAD 4-Tier Slim Storage Cart (SAKSC401W)
SPACELEAD · Best for tall bottles in a narrow gap
8.4
out of 10
The only cart here that publishes a load figure and the height of each tier, which together tell you whether a detergent bottle actually stands up in it.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 4.9 in stated in the listing text. The dimensions field disagrees, reading 5.1 in with the depth and height transposed | SPACELEAD SAKSC401W product listing |
| Tier heights | 12.5 in on the lower two tiers and 9.2 in on the upper two, stated to take 1 L detergent bottles below and jars above | SPACELEAD SAKSC401W product listing |
| Published load | Up to 30 lb per shelf; 3.2 lb empty | SPACELEAD SAKSC401W product listing |
| Build | Tool-free snap assembly, four casters with two locks, removable casters for a fixed 2 or 3 tier unit, adjustable dividers, side hooks and a hollow mesh base | SPACELEAD SAKSC401W product listing |
What the specification gets you
- The only cart on this page with a published shelf load, at 30 lb
- Publishes tier heights, so you can check a detergent bottle against 12.5 in before buying rather than after
- Mesh base is a published feature and the right one for a damp laundry corner
What it does not cover
- The dimensions field contradicts the listing text on width and transposes depth and height, so the only figure to trust is the 4.9 in in the copy
- 30 lb a shelf on four small plastic casters is a load you would not want to roll far
- Same plastic build as the other budget cart, at the same price
Coming off the wall
Nothing fixed to anything. It rolls out.
Skip this if
Skip this if you want one tall slot rather than four short ones. The fixed 12.5 in and 9.2 in tiers are the whole design and they do not move.

#5 · One width, published consistently
TEAMIX 4-Tier Slim Rolling Storage Cart, Wood Top (KS404W)
TEAMIX · Best for a gap cart that will not flex under weight
8.2
out of 10
The only cart here whose published figures agree with each other, and at 11.2 lb the only one built like furniture rather than like a bathroom caddy.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 5.5 in, published consistently in both the listing text and the size line | TEAMIX KS404W product listing |
| Overall dimensions | 15.7 in D x 5.5 in W x 31.5 in H; 11.2 lb | TEAMIX KS404W product listing |
| Shelves | Four tiers at different heights with a baffle front and back on each layer and a gap between boards for cleaning | TEAMIX KS404W product listing |
| Load | Not published | TEAMIX KS404W product listing |
What the specification gets you
- The one cart on this page that publishes a single width and sticks to it
- 11.2 lb and a wood top, so it does not shift or flex the way the 3 lb plastic carts do
- Baffles front and back, which is what stops a bottle walking off the back of a shelf during a spin cycle
What it does not cover
- 5.5 in wide rules out the tightest gaps that the 4.9 in carts clear
- Publishes no load figure despite being the heaviest-built cart here
- Around two and a half times the price of the plastic carts
Coming off the wall
Roll it out. Nothing attached.

#6 · 100 lb a shelf, wall fixing stated
Golpart Over the Washer and Dryer Storage Shelf (EA_305B)
Golpart · Best for heavy loads above a single machine
7.9
out of 10
The highest published shelf load on the page at 100 lb, on the cheapest frame -- and like the other over-washer units it expects a wall fixing.
| Specification | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published load | 100 lb per shelf and up to 80 lb on the hanging rod | Golpart EA_305B product listing |
| Overall dimensions | 29.5 in W x 13.5 in D x 72 in H; 15 lb | Golpart EA_305B product listing |
| Inner width for the machines | Not published. The listing says to measure the washer and dryer before buying | Golpart EA_305B product listing |
| Fixing | An anti-tip device is stated as included and the listing describes wall fixation; shelf and bottom support heights are adjustable, with leveling feet | Golpart EA_305B product listing |
What the specification gets you
- 100 lb a shelf is the highest published figure here and it is on the cheapest over-washer frame
- 13.5 in deep, so it intrudes less into a narrow room than the 22 in units
- Adjustable shelf and support heights, which is how you get it around a tall top-loading lid
What it does not cover
- Anti-tip device and wall fixation are both stated, so the no-drill reading of this product is yours and not the maker's
- 29.5 in wide overall with no published inner width is the least useful fit information on the page
- 15 lb of frame carrying a stated 100 lb a shelf is a ratio worth thinking about before you load the top
Coming off the wall
The frame comes apart, but the anti-tip bracket is a wall fixing like the others -- a hole to fill at move-out.
Skip this if
Skip this if you need the shelf to span two machines side by side. At 29.5 in overall it is built around one, and the listing publishes nothing about the opening.

Questions people actually ask
How do I add laundry storage without drilling?
Two routes. A slim rolling cart goes in the gap beside or between the machines and fixes nothing -- published widths on this page are 4.75, 4.9, 5.5 and 7.1 inches. Or a freestanding frame stands over the machines on its own feet and adds shelves plus a hanging rod. Read the fixing line before you buy the frame: most of them ship an anti-tip bracket that goes on the wall.
How wide is the gap between a washer and dryer?
Yours is whatever it is, and that is the point -- measure it at the narrowest spot, which is usually at the back where a hose bib, shut-off valve or baseboard intrudes, not at the front. Then match it against a published cart width with a margin. The carts here publish 4.75 to 7.1 inches, and several listings publish two different widths for the same cart, so take the larger figure.
Do over-the-washer shelves need to be attached to the wall?
Most of the ones we checked expect it. Homde states two anti-tip devices, Golpart states an anti-tip device and wall fixation, and Ulif's U13 says to assemble the included anti-tip device on the wall. The Ulif U11 Medium listing publishes leveling feet and adjustable shelves and mentions no anti-tip device. These frames are 72 to 77.6 inches tall, so if you leave the bracket off you are overriding the maker: keep the load low and the heavy items on the bottom shelf.
Will an over-the-washer shelf fit my machines?
Only one maker on this page publishes the figure that answers it. The Ulif U11 Medium states a 28.7 in inner width for the washer and dryer, and Ulif's larger U13 states that the machines must not exceed 29.9 in. Homde and Golpart publish only an overall width and tell you to measure your machines. Measure the pair as installed, including the gap between them and the hoses behind them.
How much weight can a slim laundry cart hold?
Almost none of them say. SPACELEAD is the only cart here that publishes a figure, at 30 lb per shelf. SPACEKEEPER, TEAMIX and the 7.1 in carts publish no load at all, which matters because laundry supplies are heavy -- put jugs on the bottom tier and keep the top for light, frequently used items.
Are these laundry storage units safe next to a vibrating machine?
No maker publishes anything about vibration, so treat confident claims with suspicion. What they do publish is hardware that implies it: two of the carts have braked casters, and the over-washer frames have leveling feet, with one adding a rear X-shaped crossbar. Lock the casters, level the feet on an uneven utility floor, and keep tall frames loaded low.
What is the cheapest way to get laundry storage in a rental?
A slim rolling cart, by a wide margin -- the plastic four-tier carts here are the cheapest products on the page and they need no fixings, no tools beyond snapping them together, and no permission. The trade-off is published capacity: one of them publishes 30 lb a shelf and the other publishes nothing, where the over-washer frames publish 44 and 100 lb.
