Best Wall Repair for Move-Out

The good news is that filling a nail hole is genuinely easy and the products are cheap. The trap is that a patch that is obviously a patch can cost you more than the hole would have. A landlord who sees five bright dots of filler on an aged wall has been told exactly where to look. So the figures that matter here are not about strength -- they are about dry time, hole size and how the repair behaves when it is painted.

The three published numbers that decide it

Dry time, and whether the product tells you. DAP's DryDex goes on pink and turns white, confirming dry within 1 to 5 hours, and within 1 hour for repairs 1/8 in deep. That color change matters more than it sounds: sanding a patch whose middle is still wet drags the filler out of the hole and you start again.

How these are ranked

Published dry behavior first, because it is the variable that makes patches fail -- and a product that shows you it is dry beats one that leaves you guessing. The repair, in the order that works

1. Take the fixing out properly first

Most of the damage on a rental wall happens at removal, not at installation. An adhesive strip pulled outward takes paint; a hook levered off takes plaster. 2. Press the edges in before you fill

A nail hole has a raised lip of paper around it. Filling over that lip leaves a bump you can feel through the paint. Press it flat with the back of a spoon or the flat of the putty knife first.

3. Fill proud, then sand flat -- but respect the depth rule

Overfill very slightly, because filler settles. Then respect the number: DAP publishes one hour for repairs 1/8 in deep, and two or more layers with drying time between them for anything deeper. That rule is the one people break the night before a checkout, and a deep single fill sinks into a dimple as it cures.

4. Paint, or accept the patch will show

This is the step renters skip. Filler dries flat and bright; the wall around it is aged, slightly yellowed and has a sheen. The patch will be visible unless it is painted, which is why the products that publish a 30-minute paint window and claim no change in paint sheen earn their place here.

Which one for which damage

Pin and nail holes, a handful of them. The applicator tube. No tools, no leftovers, and the published 3 in limit is far more than you need.

What we would skip

Toothpaste, soap and the other internet remedies. They dry, they shrink, they yellow, and they do not take paint. A tub of spackle costs less than a coffee.
