Search for bike storage and almost everything you find bolts to a wall. That is fine advice for somebody with a garage and a stud finder, and useless in a rental, where the two things you are least allowed to do are drill into a wall and drill into a ceiling.
Everything on this page does the job without either. As with the rest of this site, the useful way to sort them is by where the weight ends up: on the floor with the wall only stopping it tipping, pressed between the floor and the ceiling by friction, or on the floor and nothing else. That choice decides the footprint, the lift and the published number you have to check your bike against.
And there is one figure that decides more of these purchases than any other, so it is worth putting first: published per-bike capacity in this category runs from 30 lb to 75 lb, and only one of the six clears the weight of an ordinary e-bike.
Weigh the bike before you read any further
Not the manufacturer's claimed frame weight -- the bike as it stands in your hallway, with the lock, the rack, the lights, the mudguards and the pedals you actually fitted. Put it on a bathroom scale by standing on the scale holding it and subtracting yourself. It takes a minute and it eliminates most of this page for you.
The reason it matters is that the ratings here are close together and the products are not. A light road bike at 20 lb fits every option below. A mid-range hybrid with a lock and a pannier rack is often 32 to 38 lb, which is already past two of them. A mainstream e-bike is 50 to 70 lb, which is past all of them except the wheel cradle at 75 lb.

How these are ranked
Published per-bike capacity first, because that is the figure that excludes bikes. Then how honestly the maker states it -- a product that publishes both a per-bike and a total number ranks above one that publishes only a total. Then the lift: a stand you have to raise a bike onto is a stand people stop using, and that is a real cost even though it is not a specification. Then footprint against what a rental actually has spare. Then reversibility, which is total for all six. Nothing here has been tested by us; every figure is somebody else's published number. The four things that decide it
1. Can you lift the bike, every day, for a year?
This is the criterion nobody publishes and the one that decides whether the purchase was worth making. A gravity stand and a tension column both put the upper bike somewhere around shoulder height. Lifting 25 lb up there is fine. Lifting 40 lb up there in a hallway, in a coat, holding a takeaway, is a thing you will do twice.
If the bike is ridden daily, the honest answer is usually a stand it rolls into at floor level. If it is a second bike that comes out at weekends, vertical is the better trade.
2. Floor or air
A wheel cradle uses about the footprint of the bike. A gravity stand stacks two bikes into roughly the depth of one, against a wall. A tension column takes almost no floor and uses the volume above it. In a studio, where floor is the scarce resource, that hierarchy is the whole decision -- and it is the same trade as the shelving one in adhesive vs tension vs freestanding.
3. What your ceiling is
The two tension columns publish a range: 7 ft 0 in to 10 ft 0 in for one, up to 10 ft 6 in for the other. Measure yours. And check what it is made of -- a suspended tile grid is not a ceiling in this sense, and pressing a loaded column into one is outside anything either maker rates. This is the same caution as any tension rod: friction is not a rating, and the surfaces at each end decide the outcome.
4. Whether the wall can take a lean
A gravity stand does not hang on the wall, but it does press against it -- with the whole leverage of an 86-inch pole and two loaded bikes behind it. On sound painted drywall that is a scuff risk rather than a structural one, and a felt pad under the contact point deals with it. On a papered or freshly painted wall, put the pad on before the stand rather than after.
The e-bike problem, stated plainly
Mainstream e-bikes weigh roughly 50 to 70 lb. Look back at the table: 30 lb per bike, 40 lb per bike, 39.7 lb per hook, 40 lb per cradle pair. A 100 lb or 158.7 lb total does not help, because a total assumes the load is spread across every position.
The one product here that publishes a figure above an e-bike is the wheel cradle, at 75 lb -- and it is also the only one that does not require the bike to be lifted at all, which on a 60 lb bike stops being a preference and becomes the whole question. If you have an e-bike, that is the pick, and the rest of this page is about your second bike.
If you have an e-bike and no floor to give it, there is no product on this page that we would tell you is rated for the job. Saying so is more useful than pointing you at a 40 lb cradle and hoping.
Why a total is the less useful number
Two of these publish a generous-sounding total and a much smaller per-position figure, and one publishes a total and nothing else. It is worth being clear about what that means.
The Topeak states 39.7 lb per hook and 158.7 lb per stand. Four bikes at 39.7 lb is 158.8 lb, so the per-stand figure is essentially the sum of four full hooks -- it is not headroom you can spend on one heavier bike. The Delta four-bike rack works the same way: 40 lb per bike, 160 lb total.
The heavy-duty gravity stand publishes 100 lb total and no per-bike number, which leaves you to decide how to split it. Delta's own guidance is to put the heavier bike on the bottom arms, which is sensible and is not a rating. Treat the sensible reading as roughly half each unless you are confident about the geometry, and put the heavy one low.
What we would skip
The 30 lb pole stand, for anything but a genuinely light bike. It is well made, it is a fraction of the price of everything else here, and it publishes a per-bike figure where its own heavy-duty sibling publishes only a total -- which is to its credit. But 30 lb is a number a lot of ordinary bikes are already over once a lock and a rack are on, and a stand you are over the rating of on day one is not a bargain.
We would also skip every wall-mounted rack, which is most of what this category sells. They publish good numbers, and they need screws into a stud. That is a hole in somebody else's wall, and whether it is allowed is a lease question rather than a product one -- can you drill in a rental is the honest version of that conversation. And we do not rank the unbranded gravity stands whose only stated capacity lives in a marketplace listing title with no manufacturer behind it.
What bike storage cannot fix
None of this makes a bike smaller. A stored bike still occupies about 70 by 40 inches of wall or 24 by 24 inches of floor, and in a one-bedroom that is a real piece of the room. The honest first question is whether the bike can live somewhere other than the living space -- a designated bike room, a balcony with a cover, a friend's garage over winter -- because every option here is a compromise against a bike that is simply in the apartment.
The associated clutter is easier. Helmets, locks, lights and shoes are hook-and-shelf problems rather than bike problems: a 15 lb adhesive hook takes a helmet and a lock comfortably (the published hook ceiling is here), and one of these racks ships with a basket for exactly that. Three ways, and they differ in where the weight ends up. A wheel cradle holds the bike upright on the floor and touches nothing else. A gravity stand stands on the floor and leans against a wall. A tension column presses between the floor and the ceiling. All three are fully reversible and none needs a screw.
How much weight can a no-drill bike rack hold?
