How Much Weight a No-Drill Shelf Really Holds
The published figures, side by side, and the two-order-of-magnitude gap nobody mentions.

The short answer
Adhesive shelves publish 2 to 5 lb. Leaning ladder units publish 11 lb per tier. Freestanding bookcases publish 11 to 66 lb per shelf, with 44 lb per shelf common in the mid range. Every one of those is a static load on a level floor or a smooth cured wall.
If you want a shelf that holds books without drilling, the number you need is not in the adhesive aisle. This is the table that makes that obvious.

Why the gap is so large
A wall-mounted shelf is a cantilever. The load sits some distance out from the wall, and that distance multiplies into a rotating force at the mount. For an adhesive strip that force acts as peel at the top edge -- exactly the direction where adhesive is weakest -- and it grows as the shelf gets deeper. A 5 lb rating on a 4-inch-deep ledge is not the same engineering problem as 5 lb on a 10-inch shelf, which is one reason adhesive shelves are always shallow.
Freestanding shelving has no cantilever at all. The load goes down through the frame into the floor, and the published figure is limited by the shelf panel and the frame rather than by a bond to your wall. That is why 44 lb per shelf is unremarkable there and impossible in the adhesive aisle.

Search for no-drill shelf brackets and you will find marketplace listings claiming 20 kg or 30 lb per adhesive support peg. Treat those numbers with more care than the ones above, for a specific reason: they are seller claims on a listing, not figures from a manufacturer that publishes documentation you can check. What things actually weigh
Ratings only help if you know what you are putting on the shelf. Weigh it rather than guessing -- a kitchen scale settles most of these arguments in ten seconds. As a rough orientation, a row of hardbacks is heavy enough that any adhesive product is out, a couple of paperbacks is borderline at 5 lb, and framed photographs, a candle and a small plant are what a 2 lb ledge is actually for.
Give yourself margin, deliberately
- Load the back of the shelf, not the front edge. On any cantilevered shelf, weight nearer the wall produces less rotating force at the mount.
- Distribute rather than concentrate. Published figures assume the load is spread across the shelf, not stacked at one end.
- Do not treat the rating as a target. It is a ceiling under ideal conditions, and your wall, your paint and your climate are not the test conditions.
- Remember what a shelf gets used for later. The 5 lb ledge that holds three frames today is the one someone stacks books on next year.
