Best No-Drill Blinds

For a long time this site would not rank no-drill blinds, for a reason we published on no-drill vs drilled blinds: we could not find products whose makers published fit or performance figures we could cite, and we do not rank on marketing copy. That has changed for one range, and this page is the result.

What changed is specific. One manufacturer publishes, per product, the trim-to-fit range for every width, the minimum window depth an inside mount needs, and, on the blackout products, a light-blocking percentage. Those are the three numbers the purchase actually turns on, and almost nothing else in the category states any of them.

The measurement that decides everything: reveal depth

Every shade on this page is an inside mount. That means it sits inside the window opening, and it needs somewhere to sit. The published figure is 1-1/4 inches of minimum window depth, measured from the glass to the front face of the frame, with the shade sitting flush at 1-1/2 inches.

Take that measurement before you look at anything else. Under 1-1/4 inches -- which is common on aluminum-framed windows, on windows with deep sills but shallow reveals, and in a lot of older conversions -- no inside-mounted shade in this range fits, however wide it is. That single number causes more returns in this category than every other specification combined.

How these are ranked

Published performance first: a stated percentage outranks an adjective every time. Then fit documentation -- a product that tells you the trim range and the mount depth is a product you can buy without guessing. Then durability, because paper and fabric are not the same purchase over a two-year tenancy. Filtering, darkening, blackout: three different products

These words are used loosely everywhere except on the products themselves, where the differences are real and the maker is careful about them.

Light filtering

Softens daylight and gives you daytime privacy. At night, with a lamp on inside, a filtering shade gives much less privacy than people expect -- the room is now brighter than the street, and silhouettes are visible. If the window faces a walkway, this is the wrong product.

Room darkening

Blocks "a majority of light". That is the maker's phrase, and the absence of a percentage is the whole point: room darkening is a category name, not a measurement. It is right for a living room where you want the glare off a television, and wrong for a bedroom you sleep late in.

Blackout

The only tier here with a published number: 99 percent, on both the cellular fabric shade and the paper one. Note carefully what that describes -- it is the fabric, not the window. An inside-mounted shade leaves a gap at each side, and light comes around it regardless of what the fabric blocks. Paper against fabric

The paper shades are dramatically cheaper, come four to a pack, and reach the same published 99 percent on the blackout version. They are also paper: they crease, they tear at the clip points, and after a year they look like a temporary measure that became permanent. For a one-year lease, or for covering every window in an empty apartment in a single afternoon, they are the right call.

The fabric shades cost several times as much per window and buy you three things: a cordless lift mechanism instead of clips, finished end caps instead of a cut paper edge, and, in the cellular version, a honeycomb air gap that does something for insulation as well as light. Over a longer tenancy, in a room you look at every day, that is the better purchase.

The cheapest idea on this page

The Simple Slide bracket is not a shade at all. It is a pair of peel-and-stick brackets that mount inside the window frame and accept an ordinary stock roller shade -- the kind sold everywhere for a few dollars, normally requiring two screws. For about three dollars it converts the entire ordinary roller-shade aisle into a no-drill option.

The honest gap is that no weight limit is published for the brackets, which on a component whose only job is to carry a rolled shade is exactly the number you would want. Keep it to a light stock shade rather than a heavy blackout roller, and treat the missing figure as the limit it implies.

What we could not rank

Achim's 1-2-3 Shade is a real, widely sold cordless vinyl pleated shade that competes directly with the paper shades here. We are not ranking it, because the manufacturer's own site publishes no size, trim range, mount depth or light-control figure for it, and we could not retrieve one from a first-party source. That is not a judgment on the product -- it is the same rule that kept this whole page unpublished until now.

The same applies to the wider category of clamp-bracket blinds. They work by wedging inside the frame, which makes them exactly as fit-sensitive as a tension rod, and none we found publishes what reveal depth or frame width they actually need.

When the answer is a curtain instead

An inside-mounted shade cannot do two things: overhang the window opening, and cover a window wider than 60 inches in one piece. Both of those are curtain jobs, and in a rental a curtain means either a no-drill bracket that taps into wooden trim, published at 20 lb, or a tension rod inside the reveal.
